I just returned from Brazil having spent 2 weeks in Rio and 2 weeks in Fortaleza. I have to report that Fortaleza is no longer what it used to be in terms of the club scene and girls. ~~~~Apparently because of a severe police crackdown on underage girls many of the clubs catering to girls/tourists have been permanently closed down, none the least of which was Desigual, one of the most famous in Fortaleza for its girls - now shuttered. ~~ ~~~~Many others that I was familiar with by location if not by name (in the Praia Iracema area) have also closed down. ~~ ~~~~Afrikas is still open but Mon-Wed it was sparse and on the weekends had about 20-30 girls, not a hundred or more like in its heyday. Of course this is the "low" season but I was there 3 years ago at this time of year and there is only 1/10th or less the number of girls around presently as back then and not nearly as pretty as the ones I encountered in Rio.~~ ~~~~I had a much better time in Rio going to Centaurus, Monte Carlo and of course HELP but HELP girls keep getting more expensive as the Real devalues. During Carnival the girls wanted between 250-350 reais for an hour.~~ ~~~~Overall I think the best girls in Brazil can be had in Sao Paulo at places like Cafe Foto. Rio is a mans haven from the real world. I’ve personally traveled the whole world and have never came close to being just traumatized by sheer number of beautiful woman. ~~Destination: Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil~~~~The People : There are 4 classes of people:~~ ~~ Dirt Poor: approx. 35% of population, un-educated, earn less than 100 Reals per month ($40.00). Easy to spot- barefoot or wearing 79 cent flipflops. Stuck in an endless loop – no education and too poor to get kids educated.~~ ~~ Getting by: approx. 45% of population, high school education, some with university. Earn less than 500 Reals per month ($200.00). Work at hotels (maids up to reservation clerks), stores, small business, restaurants, etc.~~ ~~ Middle Class: approx. 17% of population. Earn on average approx. $12,000 a year. University degreed, parents are middle class, skilled jobs.~~ ~~ The Rich: 3% of population having more than 80% of the wealth. ~~ ~~The Sexes: There are 6-7 females to every male in the Getting by category. There is just not enough jobs for men in Fortaleza. The men have gone off to Sao Paulo and Rio for work. Try not to use credit cards in cheap places. A worker may steal the credit card number and try to use it.~~ ~~Hotel: Parthenon Hotel is a nice Hotel. Make sure you get a key for the safe in the room. Leave your wallet and extra cash in the safe. At night try to go out with only the amount you want to spend. You can leave other valuables and your passport in the safe. You do not need to have identification on you. The hotel allows you to bring female guests to your room. Some hotels such as the Holiday Inn discourage it as they are afraid you will bring in low-life girls that steal the towels and everything else in the room when you fall asleep. This will be discussed later.~~ ~~Beaches: The best beach in Fortaleza is Praia Futuro. The beach is clean and big. Every 100 yards or so is another outdoor café (Baraca) that sells food and beer. I preferred a place called Biruta but try several until you find the one you like. During the off-season the beach is only packed with girls in dental floss bikinis on weekends. Not sure if May is on-season.~~ ~~Alcohol: Beer is cheap. At a Baraca (outdoor café) a 24 ounce bottle will cost less than 2 Reals (80 cents). At the clubs at night a 12 oz. Beer will go for 2-3 Real each. Still a bargain. You will not find Bud. They sell Brazilian beers: Antartica, Kaiser, Cerpa, and Brahma. I found Cerpa to be the best but not sold at every bar. The Brazilian made liquor is called Cachaca (pronounced Ca-sha-sha). It tastes a lot like tequila but made from sugar cane. The famous drink is a Caipirinha (pronounced Kai-per-rain-ya) made with the Cachaca mixed with fresh lime juice and crushed sugar. Too many of these and you will have a hangover of a lifetime. Try the Caiperoska which is vodka with the lime juice and sugar. Better yet if you plan a long night and do not feel like drinking beer, have a few vodkas and Red Bull. The Red Bull will wake you up and keep you going all night long.~~ ~~Restaurants: All of the eateries in Fortaleza are safe. The restaurants do not have air conditioning so you will mostly sit outside where you will get the breeze. Brazil is funny. If a begger walks into the restaurant to beg the workers will not shoo him/her out. They just ignore the scene. Just shoo them away with a hand signal. The best places to eat are all within walking distance of the places you will hang out at after dinner:~~ ~~Italian: Romanza, a place near the Zip bar that has good pizza.~~~~Steak- El Goucho (the cowboy) across the St. from Pirata. Great steaks.~~~~Mixed: Sobra-Mar~~~~Japanese: Ceasar Park Hotel: expensive~~~~Food Court: Top floor at the Aldeota mall – good cheap food.~~ ~~Brazilian BBQ (Churrascaria): fantastic. They are all over the city. The best one is near Praia Futuro. Also near the GlobeNet cable station. Luis Claudio can show you – I suggest you take him there for lunch.~~ ~~Bars and Clubs:~~Monday Night: Pirata (Pirate) is only open on Mondays. It is a must. There is a cover charge of 10-20 Reals. Do not miss this place. The entertainment is great. Want to meet a girl. Just ask anyone you see to dance. Do not arrive before 10:30pm. Most of the girls go there once a month because they have to save up for the cover charge. ~~ ~~Friday and Saturday: If you are looking for live rock music go to Orbita. To buy a drink you have to go to the back and buy drink tickets. All drinks are the same price. Go to the bar and pay with the tickets. Saves on tipping. You should go here once.~~ ~~Everynight: After dinner start at the Zip bar until 10:00 to 11:00 pm. Lots of nice looking girls who will all leave around the same time to go to Africas. I did not go to the Zip bar often as my nights would start with drinks at the hotel, late dinner, and straight to Africas. The next stop is Africas. My favorite bar. Lots of girls. Stay there until 1-2pm. Then go to Desiguays (spelling is wrong). Finish the night here. Big place, tons of girls. Party goes to 4am.~~ ~~Update on Africas: They have recently changed their policy. When you walk in the bouncer gives you a card with a number on it. You go to the bar and order your drinks with your card. It is computerized. You pay your bill at the end when you leave the place. You can even pay with credit cards. ~~ ~~Disco: There is a disco called KISS which I only went to once. The place is crazy. Lots of lesbians making out. Worth a look. There are other discos but I never went to them.~~ ~~Daytime and early night: Go to Caisbar and sit outside drinking and checking all the girls walking by. On Sunday night at around 6:30pm they usually have a live band for an hour or 2. No charge and the beer is cheap. I usually had a drink or 2 there before going to dinner.~~~~ ~~Girls: Fortalezan women are extremely lonely and looking for love. The ones with a decent job do not ever go to Zip, Africas, or Desiguays. Never. The girls in these clubs are either poor college students, people just getting by, and educated girls without jobs. They go to these places in hopes of finding true love and earning some money to buy food and clothing. You have to feel sorry for them even while you are giving them the wood. I avoided meeting the girls outside of the clubs and higher class places like Pirata. But that was me. The first time I was in Fortaleza I met an educated girl who was not making a lot of money. She was a lot of fun but became a drag. Let save this story for another time. ~~~~I prefer to meet a girl in Zip, Africas, or Desiguay and take them to the Village (pronounced Vil-aah-ge) motel a few blocks away. You have the room for 2 hours and it cost around $12.00. After the session you slip the girl 50 Reals. If you had a real good time give her 100 Reals so that she can go home and have money to buy food to live. These girls are not whores. They are in a desperate situation which is culture shock to most outsiders. Take her back to Desiguays or Africas after the session and party some more. You can ditch her if you like and meet someone else. If you really like her meet her again the next night and she will be OK to go back to your hotel for the night but this could be the start of a relationship. Go for it. ~~ ~~TIP#1: The best place to meet a girl is at Africas because it is smaller than Desiguays and most of the girls are regulars and safe. The best place to be in Africas is at the bar. Pick out your girl, buy her a drink, dance a bit. Then point her out to one of the bartenders and show her the thumb up and down. If the bartender gives you the thumbs up he/she knows her. If you get a thumbs down they do not know her and she could be there to hustle you.~~ ~~TIP#2: If you get super drunk do not leave without at least one friend. There is a chance you could be robbed just like in any city. Not likely but could happen. A German guy months ago got sloppy drunk. Left the bar by himself and walked along the beach. He woke up hours later in his underwear. He fell asleep on the sand and they took everything.~~ ~~Transportation: Taxis are all over the place. Fares are cheap. At night I never used my car unless I was not going to drink. From the Parthenon hotel to Africas it is about 6-7 Real ($2.40-$2.80). During the day you may want a rental car to drive to the beach, etc. It is easy to drive in Fortaleza and the signs are excellent. You do not need to be able to speak Portuguese. When in doubt follow signs for Praia Iracema or Biera Mar. Either will take you back to the hotel. Follow signs to Praia Futuro and find the beaches. You can get rental cars at the airport or in town. I prefer Localiza, but have also rented from Hertz and AVIS. Remember to ask for A.C. If you do not ask you will get a car that will smell like a locker room in no time. ~~~~Parking at the hotel is free. When you park on the street or at the beach, someone will come over to you and give you the thumbs up sign. This means he wants permission to watch the car for you. Give him the thumbs up sign back. For 1 Real he will watch your car and make sure nothing will happen to it. Always pay when you return to the car. If you pay in advance he may not watch too closely. At the beach they will also put a piece of cardboard on your windshield to block the sun for you. Clever little fellows.~~ ~~Outside the City: There are 2 places worth going to:~~ ~~1- Cumbuco: 50 minute drive from Fortleza. Highway for first half, then crappy roads. Some roads are dirt through little dirt poor towns. Cunbuco has beautiful beaches and giant sand dunes. You can rent beach buggys and drive over dunes.~~ ~~2- Beach Park: Waterpark similar to what you will find in Florida. Cost approx. 75 Reals to get in. An hour drive from the city. I just spent a week in Fortaleza, and although there are certainly women to be had I can't agree with some of the rave reviews I have seen or heard. Here is my review.~~
~~I stayed in the Praiana Palace hotel on Iracema Beach. The room was excellent. I booked it as part of a package from Rio. The flight (4 hours inc. a stopover) and five nights in the hotel cost R1700.Problem is, as ever in Brazil, when you take a girl back she has to fill in an entire registration form, and they charged me R50 extra, even if the girl left after one hour. Its a pain in the arse.~~
~~Contrary to a earlier report on this site, I saw absolutely no sign of a pick-up scene along Iracema beach, at any time of day. It was mostly Brazilian families on vacation. I think I can recognise working girls when I see them. If you get a very occasional smile from an unattractive woman as you pass by, does this make a 'scene'? I don't think so. When riding in taxis at night you see various small groups of working girls on dark street corners, but this is hardly enticing.~~

One was very pleasant (but not exactly beautiful) and stayed with me for two nights. The other was more of a business girl, and took me to a nearby short - time motel which cost an extra R30.Cheaper than what they were charging at my hotel, I suppose.~~

Brazil is the biggest myth since Titanic. I’ve been traveling around here now for three weeks, and it seriously blows.
