Prostitution Sting Nets Three Arrests, early June, 2005.
WHEELING - In an effort to curb prostitution in the city, local police may begin releasing the names of customers who are arrested along with the prostitutes.
Calling it part of a continuing effort, Lt. Randy Rejonis of the Wheeling Police Department said a "sting" targeting prostitution netted three arrests late Wednesday. He said future operations may be done at various times of the day or night.
In addition, customers will be targeted in future stings, he said.
Rejonis announced the arrests in a Thursday afternoon news conference in Wheeling.
xxxx, 51, of Bellaire, Michelle xxx, no age given, and xxxx, 23, both of Wheeling were arrested.
[The 51-year-old is being held in the Northern Regional Jail on $1,000 bond charged with misdemeanor soliciting for prostitution. [Michelle] is free on $1,000 bond, also charged with misdemeanor solicitation.
[The 23-year-old], who is charged with felony soliciting for prostitution, is being held in lieu of $10,000 bond.
Rejonis said the arrest is the first for [Michelle] and xxx and the third for [the 23 year old].
The sting, conducted by Wheeling police with assistance from the Ohio Valley Drug and Violent Crime Task Force and the Ohio and Marshall County Sheriff's departments, began at about 6 p.m. and continued until about midnight Wednesday, he said.
It targeted an area which included the southern portion of the central business district to the Center Market area after the department received complaints from the public.
Residents and businesses in those areas have complained about the destruction of the quality of life in their neighborhood and other problems associated with the alleged solicitation.
Rejonis noted there have been complaints of alleged solicitations occurring between 6 and 7 a.m. on various days.
"We used officers to solicit the women. They were arrested when a deal was made for sex for money," Rejonis said.
Many of the officers involved in the solicitation were from the Marshall County Sheriff's Department or the drug task force.
"They know our faces," Rejonis said of Wheeling officers, who patrol in uniform the areas frequented by alleged prostitutes.
Sting operations are "manpower intensive," requiring officers to solicit the women, as well as "back-up" officers and uniformed officers who complete the arrest process, he said.
