Hampton police arrested nine people this week during a sting that targeted those soliciting prostitutes.
The undercover operation, planned and executed by the Hampton and Newport News police departments, was conducted in Hampton's hotel-motel district on Coliseum Drive on Wednesday and Thursday. Officers responded to complaints from Jefferson Ave. neighbors to target people who pick up prostitutes.
NEWPORT NEWS -- Thirteen men are facing charges that they solicited for sex an undercover police officer posing as a prostitute.
Newport News police say neighbors had made numerous complaints about prostitution along part of Jefferson Avenue. Residents reported "the same people hanging out over and over again," said Officer Harold Eley of the Newport News police. "It's part of the larger issue of drugs, guns and larger criminal activity," Eley said.
So on Dec. 16, an undercover officer posed as a prostitute in the Midtown portion of the city - from Lyliston Lane to Hemlock Road along Jefferson Avenue. That area is near several motels.

Police also arrested three men who were hanging out in the area during the sting, Eley said. xxx, 19, of Gloucester and xxx, 18, of Gloucester were charged with possession of marijuana. xxx, 47, of Hampton was also charged with possession of cocaine.
This is the second prostitution sting Newport News police have conducted this year. In March, 14 men were charged with solicitation.
Of those found guilty, the common sentence was a suspended sentence, provided the men stay out of trouble; a $250 fine; and $76 in court costs.

Five charged in prostitution arrests, early August, 2005. City police busted a prostitution ring Tuesday afternoon after a trespasser unknowingly led police past a pair of apartments where the business was operating, a Manassas City police spokesman said.
Police arrested two men, both from Manassas, two women who were brought in from West Virginia and a customer who lived in the same apartment complex, said Lt. Bill Goodman, police spokesman.
A trespasser was running from police Tuesday around 1 p.m. and ran past apartments 103 and 104 at 8663 Bruton Parish Court, where the ring was allegedly operating.
The officer saw the door to apartment 104 open and went inside, believing that the trespasser may have gone in, but found the two women instead. They led police to the two men, who were living in apartment 103.
Police had been watching the apartment since mid-July, according to an affidavit for a search warrant filed in Prince William County Circuit Court, but had not yet gained enough evidence to bring charges.
"We were going to search the apartment [Thursday night], but could not get enough to go in that night," Goodman said. "We started more surveillance to get more information for another search warrant and the trespasser gave it to us."

Police have not been able to establish if the apartment is connected to two other prostitution houses in the Manassas area that have been busted in the past six months.
Manassas City police busted a prostitution operation at 9633 Grant Ave. on May 12 and Prince William County police raided a house Feb. 11 at 9720 Lomond Drive in the Sudley Road area north of Manassas.
Goodman said all of the houses worked in a similar fashion, serving only the Hispanic community.
Each of the three men arrested Tuesday is being held with no bond at the Prince William-Manassas jail for a scheduled Sept. 19 court date.
