KNOXVILLE -- An undercover sting in East Knoxville led to the arrest of 11 people Friday night. Six were charged with prostitution, the rest were arrested on drug-related charges.
Residents living in the area say they are fed up with the problem.
Some residents say undercover stings are helping keep the street clear for a few days, but the laws are not tough enough.
They say the prostitutes busted in these operations are usually released from jail within hours, then they're back on the street again, and back to their old tricks.
Eveylyn Johnson, 69, has been actively trying to run off illegal activity in her neighborhood for years.
She says she sees prostitutes outside her Woodbine Street home everyday. "Girls getting into cars, getting out of cars. Then they go into a house. You know they're prostitutes."

Some residents feel there needs to be a higher penalty imposed on those charged with prostitution to really make a difference.

I've been frequenting street action in the Knoxville area over the past year or so. Some tips to know are the following. The typical loop from Broadway to Gay Street to Fifth Ave to Magnolia are still the hot areas. Most walkers are still in this area even though police patrol is everywhere. MEMPHIS - For the third time in two years, Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons shuts down the "King of Clubs" on Brooks Road in South Memphis. Gibbons says the strip club is a haven for prostitution.
"We've tried to work with the owners in the past, but this time we'll seek to shut down the King of Clubs for good," says Gibbons.
The King of Clubs was shut down by the D.A.'s office in August, 2003 and April, 2004 under the Tennessee Nuisance Law.
Police say they've conducted undercover prostitution stings at the King of Clubs in the past eight weeks. In the course of the undercover operation, police say they made four prostitution arrests.
The King of Clubs is owned by Charles Westlund of Long Beach, California. Westlund is the same man who wants to open a strip club in Downtown Memphis. Westlund is suing the city because the city has revoked his license to open the downtown club on Marshall Avenue.
The raid on The King of Clubs comes one day after the Memphis City Council issued a moratorium for new gentlemen's clubs.

Oasis strip club, Johnson City, TN: Cover was either $5 or $10 to get in, I do not remember which. This is a small building with not much parking. There are no stage shows. They do not serve alcohol and BYOB is not allowed. The girls are cute. There is a TV on one wall showing ESPN. A little high but worth it for what it offers as compared to other Knoxville clubs. They do not serve beer, but they have some sort of deal going where you can buy beer next door. Pregnant Woman Arrested For Prostitution Gets Maximum Sentence [which is fucking retarded], posted August 9, 2005. A pregnant woman who was arrested for prostitution hours after she was released from the workhouse has been given maximum sentences by General Sessions Court Judge, Bob Moon. Michelle Hayes of 3942 W. Road, Signal Mountain, was back in General Sessions Court Tuesday on the prostitution case. The Hamilton County District Attorney General asked the court to revoke previous suspended sentences of 11 months and 29 days for Evading Arrest and 30 days for Criminal Trespassing. Last month, Judge Moon had released Hayes, who was nine months pregnant, to have her child. Judge Moon had previously revoked Hayes’ sentence for failing a drug screen while being placed on county probation. Within hours after her release, Hayes was arrested for prostitution in a police sting on Main Street. Attorney Susan Ladico, who was appointed to represent Ms. Hayes, requested that Ms. Hayes be given a suspended sentence and allowed to participate in a family program at CADAS. Ms. Hayes had forwarded a letter to the court also requesting a suspended sentence and an opportunity to attend CADAS. Judge Moon denied the request, noting that the letter that he received from Ms. Hayes only mentioned her concern for her child at the end in a short postscript. Attorney Ladico stated that Ms. Hayes had four minor children, two living with their father and two in foster homes, including the one-month-old child. Judge Moon said, “Ms. Ladico, you have done a sterling job for your client; you have explored every avenue to assist her and to teach her how to be a good mother. However, she has failed miserably as a parent, is perhaps irrevocably drug-addicted and, as demonstrated in her letter, her children are nothing more than a “postscript” in her life.” Judge Moon denied all defense motions for a suspended sentence, revoked all previous suspended sentences, and imposed the maximum sentence of 11 months and 29 days on the prostitution charge. Info current as of late July, 2005. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Health officials issued an alert Wednesday about an outbreak of syphilis in Knox County, particularly among people exchanging sex for money or drugs.
Five cases of the sexually transmitted disease have been confirmed within the past ten days, including two cases involving prostitutes.
Some of those infected had sex with people they did not know.
The Knox County Health Department is encouraging people who suspect they may have been exposed to syphilis to get tested. Flyers will be distributed with information about the disease and testing.
Syphilis is treated with antibiotics, but can go undetected for long periods of time. If untreated, the disease can damage organs, the central nervous system and cause chronic health problems.

"You see three or four every time you go up and down the street," says Steve Hawks. Hawks drives a truck along Lamar Avenue. "It's pretty bad," Hawks adds. How bad is it? More than twenty prostitution arrests took place within a two-day period just this week. All but two happened within about a half-mile radius of Lamar and Knight-Arnold. It's where Corum Clay tires to make his living. "You know, a lot of people don't really want to come around where that type of activity is going on," says Clay. Those who work and live off this stretch of lamar are happy about prostitution arrests. However, they know those turning tricks will likely be back on the streets in no time at all. District Attorney General Bill Gibbons knows it too. "And under our state law, there's not a whole lot we can do about that," says Gibbons. His office has organized stings with MPD and thinks aggressive enforcement has made a difference. But the prostitution problem keeps popping up. "For a long time we had a problem on Elvis Presley Boulevard and then on Summer Avenue," says Gibbons. "So, it tends to move around a little bit," he adds. Gibbons believes continued pressure by police could force a move off Lamar. Meantime, folks like Corum Clay won't keep their fingers crossed. "I mean, it's been going on since the beginning of time and there's probably no stopping it," says Clay. Police are encouraged to document in detail every prostitution arrest. That's because if it happens within a mile and a half of a school, the suspected prostitute faces mandatory jail time.
