The street scene in Charleston has been through some changes since the mid '80s. The scene breaks down in two parts. First, just above the downtown area on Meeting Street, there's a housing project, and across the street, a homeless shelter. If you drive at the right time, there will be at least one or two walking north on Meeting. On a 1-10 scale, between a 4 to 6. Going north on Meeting is where it will split and Spruill Avenue starts. When the Naval Base was in operation it was the main stroll starting from Meeting Street north to Cosgrove Avenue. One cross street, Reynolds Avenue had its share of action near one of the main gates. Other side streets include Burton's Lane, Clements Avenue, and Chicora Avenue.

~~Then in the late '80s, two events took place that forever changed the Spruill Avenue scene. On 9/21/89, Hurricane Hugo hit Charleston hard. It caused extensive damage to the motel on the stroll -- the Americana. One of the two buildings suffered severe roof damage and was condemned.(It was torn down in May, 1990; the motel was closed in June, 1990). That sent the action onto Rivers Avenue. Soon, Rivers Avenue became the new stroll because of the number of motels. Starting with the Host of America motel, which has cheap rooms, then farther up Rivers is the Siesta Motor Lodge (moderately priced), Charleston Heights Motel (cheap rooms, but watch out for LE sting operations), Catalina Inn (same story), the Economy Inn and the North 52 Motel.

~~The current stroll on Rivers starts from the Montague Avenue overpass to Remount Road. Side streets to look for are Emden, Dalton, Clifton, Alton, and Fuller.
