Police arrest workers at five township spas

EAST BRUNSWICK —

A month-long police investigation of several massage parlors in the township led to the arrests of 11 workers, including three on prostitution charges. The investigation began in March after a tip was made to police about unlicensed spas operating along West Prospect Street, Route 18 and Cranbury Road. While, in the past, police have conducted raids at local spas where prostitution has been suspected, arresting both workers and patrons and shutting down the parlors, this investigation was conducted in a “low key” manner and involved no such raids, according to East Brunswick Police Capt. Keith Wilkerson. Police arrested workers at two parlors, Green Grass Spa and Anvit Inc., at 51 and 15 West Prospect St., respectively, on prostitution charges.

The suspects are [asian female] 45, of Livingston; [Eastern European female], 39, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and [Eastern European female], 23, also of Brooklyn. The investigation then led police to three other spas, where some 12 township summonses were issued to eight subjects for operating a massage parlor without a license or performing a massage without proper certification, but not for prostitution. Police found that two spas, H.N.L. Wellness Center, at 646 Route 18, and Brunswick Accupressure, 385 Cranbury Road, were operating without a license. The third parlor, Pine Spa, on Route 18, was licensed. Wilkerson said most of the spas, including the two where prostitution has been alleged, were operating out of suites within office buildings. Police are still investigating all of the spas in question, with more charges possible, Wilkerson said.

There's no bigger myth than the belief that prostitutes live a glamorous life, getting paid big money to have enjoyable sex with strangers, says Leslie Smith, a program director at Services Empowering Rape Victims. "This is no Pretty Woman," said Smith, referring to the 1990 film starring Julia Roberts. "Who would want to do this? Who would want to work this hard for nothing?" Smith and colleague Tamika Love were on hand Friday morning to offer social services and support to eight women arrested for allegedly offering sex to undercover officers in exchange for money. Smith and Love's presence marked a new tact for the Camden County Prosecutor's Office and New Jersey State Police in dealing with prostitution as a quality-of-life issue. "These are women who have lost all real connections with other humans," Smith said. "They need to trust people again." Under the new initiative, a woman arrested on a second prostitution offense would be taken to jail until she could post bail. Her probation would include attending counseling sessions with the Center for Family Services, and the Camden Area Health Education Center. The reality of prostitution, said Sgt. Willie Mahan of the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, is that it's a last resort for some women in a never-ending quest to feed their drug habits. The lifestyle, walking the streets day and night in all types of weather, degrades them physically and mentally. "It's amazing that some of them are still here, still standing," said Mahan, of the prosecutor's Community Partnership and Prosecution Unit. Mahan said the initiative ends another myth - that those arrested and charged with prostitution are back on the street 10 minutes later. "It's going to take a while for some of them to realize it," said Mahan. "We really think this program can make a difference."

Smith said the women she speaks to generally run the emotional gamut after being arrested - from blunt honesty, to denial, to sobbing pleas for help. One 28-year-old woman who was arrested Friday told Smith and Love she had hepatitis and was high on heroin. The woman did not have custody of her five children, all under age 8. "There's no real permanent connections with anything good for them," said Love. "There's no support." During a ride-along Wednesday morning with the prosecutor's office, Mahan pointed out at least a dozen women he said were prostitutes. All along Broadway, the women paced back and forth, some waving down cars as they passed. One barefoot woman climbed up into the passenger seat of a tractor-trailer and was driven off. One woman who identified herself as "Blondie" said she was a prostitute because she smoked crack. "I work for the habit," said the 38-year-old. "There's no pimps out here. The crack's my boss." Blondie said she has been hooking for several years and said the only way for her to stop smoking crack would be if she "were dropped off in the middle of nowhere." On Friday, Blondie was the first woman officers arrested and brought to a staging area to speak with Smith and Love. She did not recognize Mahan or the reporter she spoke to just two days prior. "It's the same game," said Mahan. "It's just a different day."

Fair Lawn is in Bergen County, near Paterson.

In late January, 2005, one woman was arrested and videotapes of customers were seized during a prostitution bust near Broadway and Plaza Road. 50 year old...female name? arrested for promoting and maintaining a house of prostitution. The place was operating "out of an office building since September." Police found $2,000 and the tapes were not sexual, but of customers coming and going from the office. This followed a three month investigation. First prostitution raid in Fair Lawn in more than ten years. Bust by the Fair Lawn police and other Bergen County law enforcment agencies.

Anyway, in the "gritty" section of town, right next to the Vander Plaat funeral home, a small white house with a brick red door was operating as a brothel. Three women and a pimp arrested, as well as eight unfortunate johns. $10,000 in cash stuffed beneath a mattress seized. Oh, plus the police claim the prostitutes were videotaping the clients. Twenty videotapes with hours of footage, unknown how the tapes were being used, whether being posted on the internet. Police busted the place by sending in a wired cop. Price was $120. The cop was taken to a downstairs basement and a "room with a trap door."

There, a 35-year-old Hispanic girl asked him if he wanted oral sex or intercourse. The police also found a pistol. They set up a reverse sting and then busted men coming in. The place was advertised in a four line ad in Saturday's edition of The Record, "Gorgeous, busty, young sexy girl. My place." Estimates of 35 to 40 customers a day. All the johns released on their own recognizance pending court hearings. I think Paramus just put itself on the map in a big way.

Here is my review of two new places to avoid like a plague.

There is a new place that opened in Roselle Park, at 1 W. Westfield avenue. I went in and paid $60 for an hour. Received a horrible table shower on a piece of table cloth plastic in a dark room. After this off to the massage table, the whole massage sucked, all she did was rub lotion all over me, no pressure, and asked a 1000 everyday questions about the weather, my nationallity, do I live near there, line of work, etc. Told me to flip over, did the same rubbed me down with this lotion. Had the nerve to ask $50 for a HJ. Left without tipping and will never go back. Stay away!

There is a new place in Hillside at the corner or Elizabeth Ave & Hillside ave, another ripoff to avoid. The place in Roselle Park was all Russian, so I had to talk about Russia during the massage, it totally sucks!

Hi Guys, this place is a waste of your time & hard earned money. The place is in an office building on Rt 46 & the the massage place is in a dump. The girls in there are not too bad -(at least a 5 in the looks department), however, the massage is lame & when it comes time for the good stuff the only way it will be done is by you using "rosie palm & her five sisters".

I spent way over $100.00 & got nothing. Went right home after that & showered because the place was so dirty. 

Drove down Grand street early one weekday and saw about 10 women walking. Mostly 30-40 and 3-6. I was desperate.

Paid two hoes 5 bucks to pee on each other. Paid 2 other hoes 10 bucks to eat each other. Found a young clean one and asked her to get a friend. Paid 30 bucks each for 1 hour of anything. Did all, front, rear, top, bottom, both sucking me at the same time. It was great. Most girls will let you fuck for 10 bucks. Best cheap whores in town. Best time to go is around 10am until 1pm.
