On a trip across Nevada I stopped in to check the brothels in Elko Nevada. Checked Mona's, Sues' Geisha and Inez's. August 10, 2007. Sagebrush Ranch in Carson City. This place is located in the Red Light District outside of the city by about 4 miles or so, gotta pay attention or you will miss the road during daylight. Brothel back in business
RENO, Nevada -- The infamous Mustang Ranch brothel has been cleared to operate under its famous name, 18 months after it reopened for business at a new location.
A U.S. federal judge ruled the exclusive owner of the Mustang Ranch trademark is Lance Gilman, who bought the gaudy pink-stucco buildings that once housed the bordello in 2003 and moved them a short distance next to his Wild Horse Adult Resort & Spa east of Reno.
U.S. District Judge Edward Reed's decision Friday went against rival brothel owners David and Ingrid Burgess, who sued Gilman over the trademark to the most notorious whorehouse in the West in January 2004.
A pink-coloured sign featuring the Mustang Ranch name and logo - a woman with flowing hair - went up at the brothel along Interstate 80 shortly after the judge's ruling was made.
Because he had been barred from using the Mustang Ranch name until the lawsuit was resolved, Gilman reopened it with the generic name World Famous Brothel.
"We're absolutely delighted," Gilman said Saturday. "It's euphoria to have the most famous brothel name in the world. That name is so well known worldwide. The Mustang Ranch rides on."

Two women consider opening new brothel, late July, 2005. Two Nevada women are exploring the idea of opening a brothel in Churchill County on Kamibo Drive.
Ruth Hall, of Carson City, and Dawn Santos, of Virginia City, want to open a brothel at 7750 Kamibo Drive, which is located off Trento Lane, northeast of Leeteville Junction.
Their plans will be a discussion item at a July 26 workshop meeting of the Churchill County Planning Commission. No formal decision will be made at the meeting.
"We know of someone who is in the business and respect her very much," said Hall, who is employed in retail. "We decided after looking at various counties, Churchill seemed to be the most friendly use-wise in terms of fees and what have you."
The women have looked at other sites in the county for a brothel, Hall said. They also looked at Salt Wells Villa and the Lazy B, but determined the cost to purchase the property and build an acceptable structure was prohibitive, she said.
There are currently no brothels operating in the county.
Salt Wells was closed in 2004 after the owner declared bankruptcy and the health department found the facility lacked potable water. The Lazy B has been vacant for years.
If a brothel was placed in the county, three or four older women would work as managers, Hall said. The number of working girls has not been determined, but she said finding employees should not be a problem.
"We definitely want to have it be a first-class operation," Hall said. "We do not want to have anything sleazy."
She cited the "safety valve" argument as a justification for a brothel in the county.
"It's such a needed outlet," Hall said. "I would rather have something of this nature going on in a controlled environment than to have somebody raped in an alley somewhere or untold of things being done to innocent people."
The Churchill County Commission approved a brothel ordinance in April following months of discussion and 18 draft revisions. Under the ordinance, prostitutes work as independent contractors and are responsible for their own taxes and weekly medical exams.
The first step in opening a brothel in the county is to obtain a special use permit from the planning commission. If approved, prospective brothel owners then apply for a brothel license, which entails an extensive background check, advertising plan and other requirements.
Brothels are not restricted to any particular area of the county. They are prohibited from operating within 2,000 feet from parks, schools, school bus stops, churches and adult entertainment businesses.
Churchill County residents voted to allow legal prostitution in the county in 1974. A ballot measure to repeal the ordinance failed in November 2004 by a 2-to-1 margin.

The old Mustang Ranch brothel will reopen next week at a new location, but without hoopla or its famous name.
Lance Gilman, who bought the pink stucco building that once housed Nevada's most storied bordello, is barred by a federal court from using the Mustang Ranch moniker until a lawsuit over its trademark is resolved.
So, he intends to open it, without fanfare, on July 1st as Lance Gilman's World Famous Brothel, with 30 rooms and 20 prostitutes.
Gilman bought the building in 2003 from the federal government, which had seized it in 1999 following convictions of its principals. But rival brothel owner David Burgess claims he acquired the mark after the government abandoned the name while the brothel was under its ownership.
Burgess sued, and a federal court issued a preliminary injunction against Gilman using the name until the trademark issue is resolved.
