Once Tamares Group clears title to the Hotel Nevada & Casino, the low-priced hotel may become history.
"It's on a respirator. It is not long for the world," says Frank Schreck, who is representing Tamares in litigation with Tamares' former minority partner, Barrick Gaming. Schreck says the Nevada will probably be bulldozed into a parking lot.
Tamares picked up the Hotel Nevada for $7 million in October 2004, along with the Queen of Hearts motel, from previous owner Ann Meyers. During the mid-1990s, Meyers was frequently in trouble with the city of Las Vegas and gaming regulators, as the two small hotels were the cause of numerous police calls.
Built in 1974, the Hotel Nevada may make way for a parking lot, once its ownership is resolved.
In the May 2, 1996, Las Vegas Sun, Steve Sebelius reported that "The (Queen of Hearts) has frustrated police in the past due to frequent drug and prostitution arrests made there." Following a December 1995 drive-by shooting, owner Meyers told Sebelius, "I don't see any suspicious activity at all."
Meyers' optimism to the contrary, the Queen of Hearts had been the scene of 680 Metro visits over the preceding 24 months.
In March 2004, Barrick Gaming President Stephen Crystal told the Nevada Gaming Control Board that his company intended to "refurbish and reopen (the Nevada and Queen of Hearts) with gaming by about September 2005," according to the Sun. At the time, each hosted a slot route, operated by Capabo Gaming. According to the Control Board, the Queen of Hearts' gaming-enabled status was allowed to lapse in September. The Nevada continues to host a handful of slot machines (16, according to Casino City Press' Gaming Business Directory) which, because they are part of a route, require only that Capabo, and not Tamares, be licensed to operate gambling.
As for the refurbishment, it appears not to have materialized, judging from consumer comments found on the Internet. Remarks posted at Travel.Yahoo .com following the Barrick takeover complain of cockroaches, non-functioning air conditioning, rooms without phones and an inability to obtain refunds.
"When they got into this deal, they thought Barrick would be able to operate it profitably," Schreck says of the shortlived downtown partnership. He adds with a chuckle, "And they were wrong."

LAS VEGAS — It is an alternative chamber of commerce, one for a group of merchants who say they've been ostracized, denigrated and disrespected by the larger business community.
The annual barbecue is held at the Chicken Ranch, a brothel in Pahrump, Nev.
Other mixers include outings to strip clubs. Power-brunch speakers are expected to "motivate, inform and educate without being dry, dull or boring," as chamber literature puts it.
"We actually have a voice now," said Peppy Huffman, marketing director for Paradise Electric Stimulations, a Las Vegas-based manufacturer of erotic-aid products. "The way I see it, somebody's sticking up for the little guy here."
Bill Krane, who operates a holistic wellness center and the adjoining Night Moves, where people come to see racy lingerie modeled, said he would have joined the regular chamber if he had been made to feel welcome — "but quite frankly, I wasn't."
So Krane, Huffman and 260 other merchants joined the Sin City Chamber of Commerce, a sort of renegade chamber run from a cramped room in a nondescript office complex it shares with mortgage brokers and a branch of the Dairy Council of Utah/Nevada.
The year-old chamber is run by two former employees of the much larger and mainstream 94-year-old Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, which calls itself the "Voice of Business."
The idea sprang up last year when one of the former employees, Loretta Holt, was surprised to hear that a local company was being struck from the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce's roster. The firm, she was told, operated a site offering sexually explicit photographs for downloading.
"I remember thinking, 'Now wait just a minute,' " said Holt, a membership-retention specialist for the chamber at the time. "Adult entertainment is the lifeblood of our community. It's a multi-billion-dollar business here."
Holt, a grandmother of 19, now serves as president of the alternative chamber.
The Sin City chamber represents strip clubs, "adult toy" manufacturers, pornography publishers, escort services and telephone-sex merchants, and some members who don't have anything to do with adult industries but who joined for the networking and referral opportunities.
"Strip clubs need copying machines, for example," said Sin City's chief executive, Wayne Bridge, pointing to a copy machine in the chamber's cramped office. "Dancing girls buy cars. Everybody needs their taxes done. There's a lot of business to be done with our people."
Bob Linden agreed. The owner of Shred-It Las Vegas, an on-site document destruction company, Linden said he has generated a lot of work through contacts in the Sin City chamber. (He belongs to the mainstream chamber too.)
"Adult businesses are a marketing segment conducting legal business, just like any other business," Linden said. "They have human resources, financial information, credit card receipts, stuff like that. And they need that stuff shredded."
One of his three salesmen makes it a point to go to Sin City mixers, and has generated a lot of business that way, Linden said. He gave the responsibility to the unmarried salesman.
"It's good that he's a single guy," Linden said. "I wouldn't want him having to tell his wife, 'Honey, I'm off to a work thing at a brothel in Pahrump.' " (Pahrump, where prostitution is legal, is a 60-mile drive west of Las Vegas.)

The idea is finding support in some other cities — including Los Angeles and San Francisco — where similar websites have been started.
Renee Rand of Party Gals, a North Las Vegas-based adult party planner, said referrals from the Sin City chamber website accounted for 5% to 10% of her 30,000 in-home parties annually.

One man is dead and another recovering from his injuries after being shot outside a Las Vegas strip club.
Police say two groups were arguing yesterday about 5:40 a.m. in the parking lot of Sapphire Gentleman's Club on South Industrial Road near Desert Inn Road.
Shots were fired and the two men were hit. One man was taken to University Medical Center, where he died.
The second victim was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center and was expected to survive. Detectives were searching for several people in connection with the shooting.

I rent a car and checked out the Fermont Street in the morning, afternoon and night. It may have been the crystal clear surveillance video which helped Metro police catch a suspected robber. Surveillance video captured the robbery at the Superior Foot Massage on Paradise. Tuesday, police arrested one of the men in the video, Manuel Anthony Velasco.
Police say the 18-year-old is facing attempted murder, robbery, kidnapping, burglary and battery charges. The store's owner was shot in the shoulder but he wasn't seriously hurt.

Despite the hype, Las Vegas is really not the best place in the world to get satisfaction if you are on a budget.
