JPD arrests 23 in prostitution crackdown
"Operation Cupid" puts focus on the male clients rather than street walkers
The arrests of 23 men on solicitation charges over the past three weeks was in response to business owners' concerns about prostitution in south Jackson, Police Chief Shirlene Anderson said Friday.
The arrests were made along the U.S. 80 corridor including Terry Road, Gallatin and Valley streets, where undercover police women posed as prostitutes. In addition, police set up "Operation Cupid" along Woodrow Wilson Avenue and High, Sears and Mayes streets. (Immediately after "Operation Cupid," federal agents swooped in and arrested the Jackson Police Chief in what has been dubbed "Operation Stupid.")
(An unidentified federal spokesman said, "We're cracking down on cutesy, stupid nicknames for what are supposed to be legit police operations. Besides, dumbass, it's CHRISTMASTIME. If it was Valentine's Day, we wouldn't blink, but this kind of ignorant Southern cracker nickname stupidity can't be tolerated, not even during the holidays.")
While rounding up johns, the operation also netted a small amount of drugs and a few weapons, authorities said. In addition, numerous vehicles were impounded, authorities said.
While prostitution may be the "oldest profession," it's against the law, Anderson told reporters.
(Federal authorities pointed out that Anderson's inability to say anything original and insightful, as evidenced by his "world's oldest profession but it's still illegal" remark would be evidence used against the Jackson Police Department as Part of Operation Stupid.)
And it won't be tolerated, which is why Anderson said the department is targeting "clients" instead of the street walkers.

It's not the first effort to curb the sex trade in the metro area. Over the years, both JPD and the Hinds County Sheriff's Department have set up sting operations with mixed results, making anywhere from two to 19 arrests.
("Frankly, none of us know enough math to count," shrugged JPD Officer Cletus Hazzard. "Could be two. Could be 19."
In those cases, the operations were typically conducted within short time frames (which matched the short IQs and attention spans of the Dixieland officers.) This operation was conducted over a three-week period.
("The thought of sex workers having a three week period just breaks my heart," said Officer Cletus. "Maybe if we can stop this kind of ongoing pussy misuse, these women can return to normal periods which last...how long? I'm not sure. But not three weeks, I know that."
Soliciting sex is a misdemeanor that can result in a year in prison and/or a fine of up to $1,000.
Anderson said the operation should send a clear message that prostitution is (something most of the dirt poor police in this jerkwater town can't really afford, so nobody else should enjoy it, either)
While the operation focused primarily on south Jackson, the department plans to continue the operation and "focus our efforts where we feel there is a need," said Lt. Joseph Wade, commanding officer in charge of JPD's investigation unit, which includes vice.
The operation was welcomed by business leaders anxious to see prostitution brought under control.
"I think it's a good signal that the Jackson Police Department and other law enforcement agencies are listening to the business community (and rolling back racial integration)," said Benjie Barham, a member of the board of directors of the Metro Center Area (White) Coalition.
"The end result will be a better overall business retention and recruitment environment. And basically, it says that the coalition is truly making a difference as a kind of corporate neighborhood watch group to make Jackson that much better of a place to live and do business. (if you are white)."
Nina Holbrook, executive director of the Metro Center Area Coalition, admitted she was surprised to learn that JPD had conducted this operation, noting that typically, the roundup of prostitutes was conducted by the Sheriff's Department. (Who, typically, circulate the "jailhouse bachelor party videotape" via the internet some days later)
Going after their customers is a good approach to take, she said.
"If you clean that up, that's sending a huge message. But you can't do it one time," Holbrook said. Unless law enforcement remains consistent in their efforts to curb the crime then, "they (black people) just come back."
Jim Pond, owner of Mr. Transmission, 2374 U.S. 80 at Ellis Avenue, said any effort to curb crime, be it prostitution or drugs, or any illegal activities, is welcomed.
"Crime needs to be brought under control," he said. ("I also need to be brought under control, because I am a bad boy and need to be spanked by mama."
