Ann Arbor Police Shut Down Brothel
Ann Arbor police said they are cracking down on a local brothel by mailing letters to those who visit them.
Ann Arbor police have sent out more than 40 letters to people whose vehicles were found parked at an alleged business of prostitution.
Police said they ran license plate numbers to find out who the cars were registered to. In some cases it was men getting out of the cars, but the cars were registered to women.
The business was known as Skincare Philosophie and advertised services like facials and hair removal. Police said owner Kimberly xxxx, 39, faces six charges including four prostitution charges, and employee xxx, 31, was also charged.
Lt. Michael Logghe said they had an ongoing investigation, and did find that there was prostitution conducted out of the business.
Those who live near the brothel said they don't want that type of business in the neighborhood and are glad the police are involved.
Police said they have ran a number of investigations over the years for brothels disguised as spas. They said they hope to eventually eliminate these types of businesses from the city.
Police said there is not evidence to charge the men who visited the business, but might be called to testify against the women who were running it.
Police said they have shut down the business and turned it over to the property owner.

"It will be a joint effort." Last week, two prostitutes and 19 johns were arrested during the crackdown in Mount Clemens. Undercover officers also raided a home on Gratiot where four people were arrested on drug charges. Deputies seized the alleged johns' cars. The Sheriff's Office will begin working with the local district court judges and Mount Clemens city officials to use forfeiture laws to seize homes used for drug activity and prostitution, Sheriff Mark Hackel said. The increased police presence along Gratiot Avenue has been a welcome sight to business owner XXX. He said he had been dealing with aggressive prostitutes and drug users who would jump into cars that were pulling into his auto repair shop, Hot Rods. As the Macomb County Sheriff's Office begins to take over operations for the Mount Clemens police, one group of activists trying to rid their neighborhood of prostitutes and drug dealers has launched a new crime-fighting technique.

Members of the North Gratiot Neighborhood Watch on Sunday and Monday evenings posed as streetwalkers and vagrants in an area north of the Mount Clemens downtown section known for its street crime.
When potential customers pulled over, the activists handed out a flier that states: "If you're soliciting sex and/or drugs in this neighborhood, you are being videotaped. Stay tuned for the 11 (o'clock) news. Zero tolerance."
Watch group organizer Deborah Roberts said the homeowners are using the new technique because they are tired of motorists driving around the block asking law-abiding men and women for crack cocaine or sex for money.
"We can't wait five more weeks for Sheriff Hackel to get in here," Roberts said. "We're paying all these taxes to the city and our own police officers are overworked. This city needs to be held accountable."
Sheriff Mark Hackel and his deputies will officially take over patrols in the city beginning July 1. The Mount Clemens City Commission this past spring voted to disband their own police department and hire the sheriff's office as a cost-savings measure.
The North Gratiot group has become increasingly vocal about crime in their neighborhood over the past two years, posting signs, handing out leaflets and videotaping alleged drug sales and prostitutes waving down cars.
Although they acknowledge posing as a hooker late at night is extremely risky, some of the group members are carrying mace or other weapons to be used in self defense. Their videotapes are being turned over to law enforcers.
"We can't even walk in our own neighborhood without being solicited by some creep driving by," Roberts said. "We simply aren't getting adequate protection."
Hackel has vowed to wipe out drug trafficking and prostitution in the area when his deputies take over law enforcement duties in Mount Clemens in four weeks.
The transition process is moving along smoothly, the sheriff said last week.
Sheriff's office investigators have been stopping by the city police department to pick up case files for the detective bureau to work on. That includes current and cold cases, officials said.
"The transition is in process," Hackel said.
City officials have met with union leaders to work out severance and sick time pay that is owed to Mount Clemens officers once the department ceases to exist June 30.
Because Hackel hopes to hire a number of the city's police officers, he has convinced the county's civil service commission to waive some requirements, such as a 2-year degree that is required for entry-level positions in the sheriff's office. City police officers with four or more years of experience will be allowed to apply for deputy positions for Mount Clemens patrols.
"I'd rather have an educated work force, but I want to be able to select Mount Clemens officers who I know will be a big asset for our department to provide continuity in our patrols," Hackel said.
The sheriff's office will hire 17 new deputies for the city along with one command officer. Eight of the officers will come from the Mount Clemens department, while the other nine will be promoted from county corrections officers.
The sheriff's office normally mandates new hires begin work as corrections officers and then are promoted to patrol deputies over time. Hackel was able to work out a labor agreement with the corrections union to allow the change.
Before returning to city streets, Mount Clemens officers will undergo training for report writing and firearms, Hackel said.

Grand Rapids - A prostitution sting on Grand Rapids Southeast side Thursday night landed 12 people in jail.
1 woman was charged with prostitution, while 11 men were charged with soliciting.
The Grand Rapids police department says it wants to send a message.
Lieutenant Pete McWatters says, "This activity is not wanted in the neighborhood by residents and by business owners and it's our obligation to address some of these problems and we want people to know it is not welcome behavior and we're going to be enforcing the laws down there."
Lieutenant McWatters [says] there's no pattern to the stings and the department is planning more for the summer.

Wyoming, Michigan is a little bit west of Grand Rapids. It should not be confused with the State of Wyoming. A recent sting rounded up 28 johns in a matter of hours as three undercover female officers walked a stretch of Division Avenue north of 28th Street to the Grand Rapids border. Division Avenue apparently has a Wyoming side and a Grand Rapids side, and the Wyoming police don't want the prostitution on *their* side. Now that's what they call problem solving. They had a mobile command unit with a team of 30 officers for this little fiasco. The female officers wear "no make up and only normal clothing, nothing provacative or revealing." They are photographed prior to the event to document their attire for the judges. Suspects have their vehicles impounded. The arrests tend to capture quite a few hispanics. The men sometimes line up four deep just to talk to the decoys. Police are fretting aloud their stings could be cut due to budget cuts and said, at that time, that passage of an increased "millage" was critical. Oh, my, I wonder if they got that mill rate passed? After all, we can see how well they use the public tax dollars, can't we? NOT.
