Somerset struggles to deal with prostitution.
WESTOVER -- Somerset County guards its traditions. From its proud marine heritage to its abundant farmland, residents take pride in their roots.
Watermen and farmers are among the oldest professions helping to keep those traditions alive. But Somerset isn't immune to the oldest profession in the world, one many of the county's residents believe was reserved for more urban communities.
According to law enforcement officials, prostitution is providing the quick gratification some need in the rural county known for its skipjack lineage and crab derbies.
A migrant workers camp on north Route 13 behind a small cornfield in Westover is one hotbed that provides a steady cash flow for Somerset's sex-for-money entrepreneurs.
When darkness falls, according to police, sexual solicitation isn't unheard of -- especially during peak farming seasons at the migrant camp, which is often filled with hundreds of workers carrying lots of cash.
Based in Princess Anne, a particular group of prostitutes told a Daily Times reporter their stories of pimps, drugs, solicitation and the risks humans take to feed addiction.
Dawn xxx of Princess Anne said the streets are familiar ground.
"I've been on the streets all my life. I know how to do it," she said.
Like many in her profession, drugs were enough motivation to bed down with strangers.
"It's all about crack cocaine," she said. "I've been on drugs all my life."
Laura xxx of Princess Anne said she has "hooked" for as little as $10 -- the going rate is $20 -- to feed her drug addiction, adding that it wasn't always standard operating procedure to make her johns use condoms. The 23-year-old caught chlamydia on the job and put her life in jeopardy with regularity.
Catherine xxxx, from her home at the Somerset County Detention Center, wore two hats. The 23-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of prostitution, according to court documents, and admitted she pimped girls to the migrant workers and others.
Several of the prostitutes said pimping duties were aided by xxx's boyfriend, 28-year-old Mike xxxx of Manokin.
"It's a part of my life that I want to put in the past," said xxxx, when contacted by a reporter. He has had his run-ins with the law throughout his life, police said.
xxxx said Shelley xxx, 45, was the first woman they took to the migrant camp behind the Westover Park & Ride because she was a good earner.
xxx, of Princess Anne, said she went at least three times to the migrant camp and made about $180. Xxx always kept the money, she said.
"(xxxx would) say, 'Business,' and they'd say, 'How much?,' Xxxx said. "(The migrant worker would) say, 'Follow me,' and I'd go in there."
xXXX and the others said they would perform acts with the men in the small one-story dormitory-like buildings.
In one night, XXXX said, she and XXXX made about $150 off XXX and her 10 customers.
Money in hand, XXXX would call drug dealers from the Goose Creek convenience store. The dealers would meet him at the migrant camp, XXX said.
XXXX said they even made friends with a Mexican migrant worker who spoke English to help find interested patrons.

The duo pimped a handful of women. The last time xxx and xxx were at the migrant camp was Sept. 27 when they took xxxx -- her fifth time -- to prostitute for drugs, xxx said.
The prostitution situation came as a shock to many county residents. Others scoffed at the notion that the prostitution industry was something new.
"Wow," said Aneetra Hankerson of Westover. "I had no idea. I've lived here all my life. The more people they let into the area, the big city climate comes in."
A Princess Anne resident of nearly 22 years, Karen McCue said there's no escaping the seedy industry.
"It goes on everywhere," she said. "You don't want it to be like the big cities. That's why you move down here to live in the country life."
Pamela Kemp of Princess Anne said she thinks it's a shame that women think so little of themselves that they think they have to prostitute to support themselves or their habits.
Somerset County Sheriff Robert Jones said his office received complaints about xxxx and the prostitutes from the Park & Ride and Goose Creek convenience store in August and September.
"We had calls but we never caught anybody," Jones said. "It came on us pretty quick before we could get onto it."
The Sheriff's Office sits directly across the migrant camp on the south side of Route 13. Jones sent his deputies to investigate the complaints but they were unable to make any arrests.
Sgt. Dave Dalfonso of the Maryland State Police Princess Anne barrack said he is sure prostitution has occurred since the camp opened.
"We're not naive enough to think that (prostitutes) aren't there," he said. "If a problem comes to our attention, we'll take care of it."
The Princess Anne Police Department is aware of the prostitution problem as well. Capt. Scott Keller said he and Chief Russell Pecoraro were trying to get xxxx to appear in court -- part of an investigation that led them to and beyond the migrant camp.
"We found out what (xxxx) was doing," Keller said. "He was pimping (xxx). Also they were soliciting truck stop drivers. When we locked up (xxxx) for prostitution ... we know for a fact that she pulled up solo in a vehicle and offered a man her most valuable services."
Keller said he knows the women are "working the streets" in Princess Anne.
"We've arrested all of these prostitutes," he said.
Xxxx has never been arrested for contributing to prostitution.
"These are all allegations; there are no facts here," he said. "This is defamation of character."
Keller said Xxxx is a well-known offender at the Princess Anne Police Department.
"Every time he's in town, he's in jail," Keller said.
(Clearly an untrue statement, and arguably libelous)
Keller said his department and Somerset County Sheriff's Office have warrants out for xxxx's arrest for failure to appear in court on charges of theft, burglary and more.
Jones said his department will keep an eye on the prostitution next summer.
"As soon as we get the first complaint, we'll try to do something different and break it up. I hope it doesn't happen again," he said.
Not to say prostitution isn't happening all across the Lower Shore, but few arrests are made across the tri-county area except in Salisbury, where there were 40 arrests in 2004, 36 in 2005 and 26 so far this year, said Capt. Mark Tyler of the Salisbury Police Department.
Smaller communities like Pocomoke City reported no arrests for prostitution in 2005 and 2006. (Which is quite odd...given the name) Princess Anne law enforcement agencies were unable to provide data Thursday.
"It's a difficult thing to prove," Jones said. "Is it illegal for a woman to walk up to a man? If you go into a room and come out how do I know what happened in that room?"
He said the only way to catch them is for an undercover cop to solicit one of the women and see if she accepts money for sex.

The 40-something-year-old former prostitute said she's getting too old.

Laura xxx said she stoppped hooking in October because Maryland State Police visited the migrant camp one night and she nearly left in handcuffs.
But, she said, (blah blah, hard life, saying things to please the reporter, etc.)

Massage lasted 30 minutes instead of the hour I paid for, and she stated that she was rushed because they were busy. All I can say is it is a lesson learned and not to waste money there.

My first visit to Lily's Spa... I was greeted by the receptionist and taken inside to make payment. The entire place is very clean, and the people I met were extremely nice. My hostess took me to the Sauna, then later for a very thorough and complete wash-down. Then back to the Sauna for a bit.

An undercover female officer posed as a prostitute in the 500 block of North Market Street about 10 p.m. on Thursday, police said. Police did not explain how much the sting, which only turned up one little fish in the net, cost the taxpayers.

This is the cherry popping first posting for Lexington Park, which is in Southern Maryland...about the spot where you would want to set up artillery to defend the inlet to the inland waterway. It's a pretty isolated town, relatively small. The police busted exactly one female prostitute, age thirty five, thus putting their town on the World Sex Map. I don't know how it's possible that nobody has ever posted about Annapolis, Maryland, a town filled with sailors, but I will be happy to try to start the trend. West street is reportedly the only place in the city with street walkers as of June, 2004, despite expensive and massive urban revitalization efforts poured into this area. Women ages 36, 43, 19, 26 and 26 were arrested, as well as some johns, the oldest of which was 79 years old and gets a big fucking SALUTE from yours truly. New update of street action in Maryland.... there is none, but if you go down town DC you can find the action around K street and 13-17 streets there are slim pickens but it depends on the nights that you go sometimes it is between 6-7 girls and othernights 12-13 girls but try going after 1 am this is when you will have your best luck the quality of girls 7-8 out of ten.

Just to let everyone know, almost all of the local massge parlors have beens shut down. Even the hand release places. The only place still open I know of is the place I mentioned earlier, Classic Therapy in Wheaton. I went there a couple of months ago after they reopened and the mamasan said $80 at the door.
I asked why it changed from $60 and she told me to go away and come back later. They can kiss my ass. For $90 I can go incall to a independant provider and get better treatment, same services and more.
