Enterprising johns have found a loophole in a law giving police the power to pinch their cars, but cops say it won't last long.
The law took effect Oct. 31 and city police have run one sting operation since, Insp. Brian Nowlan told the police commission yesterday.
"During that time, our approach was we will only be seizing the vehicles of johns that do not qualify for john school," said Nowlan.
They dealt with 47 johns, but some were walkers, said Nowlan, realizing they could lose their wheels if they were caught in their cars.
"So they parked half a block away, found a loophole in the act, and came up on foot," said Nowlan.
Nowlan said that's been addressed with the solicitor general and "steps are being taken at the spring sitting to have those loopholes filled up."
He didn't say how many cars, if any, were seized during the sting.
He said city police will be taking a different approach during their next operation.
"The next operation you see we will likely be seizing every vehicle which is provided for under the legislation," said Nowlan.
In his presentation on prostitution to the commission, he also spoke about Bill 212, named the Safe Communities and Neighborhood Act, being prepared by Art Johnston, MLA for Calgary-Hays.
Nowlan read part of the proposed law to the commission, saying the bill will "improve community safety by targeting and, if necessary, shutting down residential and commercial buildings and lands that are habitually used for illegal activities such as producing, selling or using illegal drugs, prostitution, solvent abuse, or the unlawful sale and consumption of alcohol."
(Gentlemen...we need to PAY ATTENTION TO THE LOOPHOLES. Like, they're going to change this law. To what? To five blocks? Six? To any vehicle you drove that day? You might have to take a bus or a cab. As Edmonton's population grows, so too does the number of women selling sex on the streets.
Information presented to the Edmonton Police Commision last night say the number of street prostitutes have doubled in the last five years...and that's being chalked up to an influx of people, but mostly to street drugs.
This came out in an update on what's being done to tackle prostitution in Edmonton.
[Working Girl Butthole] Inspector Brian Nowlan says there are possible new tools coming for police in the new year...including ways to shut down drug and prostitution houses without going through the usual court process.
A new law this year allows police to seize the vehicle of someone soliciting sex.
But police in this city are finding Johns leaving the car around the corner when the walk to the girls.
Nowlan says something will change to get the car, even when it's parked somewhere else.
Commissioner Dennis Anderson did voice his personal opposition to continued laws allowing the seizure of vehicles...or people calling in license plate numbers of suspected Johns.
Insp. Nowlan did note 20 percent of calls to "Report-A-John" end up with letters being sent to the owners of the vehicle.

Edmonton is a very scary city when it comes to street action. Aside from a serial killer on the loose, there are also several gangs which like to set you up and rob you.
