These are insured, safe legitimate businesses who generally use unmarked saloon cars which have radio contact and charge per mile. The black cabs are about twice the price but you can hail them from the street and can fit 5 people. If they are available for hire their yellow light will be on. There are plenty of dodgy cabs in the West End. Often a guy will be coordinating these from a street corner. They are generally unregistered, unlicensed, uninsured wrecks driven by Africans who have learnt to drive in their own country ($20 buys a driving license from the local official). Yeah I went to Soho, and yeah I regret it, a lot. First of all, the hostesses or the people selling the 5 £ tickets are never honest. You will always have to pay more in all kind of modelling, table, hostess fees etc. It doesn't matter how many times you ask them upfront, they will not admit they are going to charge you anymore, but you can be sure they will.
