Lights to be dimmed for prostitutes, early June, 2005.
The Belgian city of Antwerp is to dim its new waterfront lights after complaints from prostitutes.
Sex workers complained the bright lights were putting off potential clients, reports Independent Online.
"We had some remarks from the prostitutes that there was too much light, both for them and the clients," city council spokesperson Jorn Verbeeck said.
"We are investigating the possibility of lowering the light there."
Prostitutes complained to city and police officials that the lights did not give them enough privacy and hurt business, he said.
The port, which tolerates sex workers in a select few streets near the waterfront, is to test an electric system to dim the lights.

Huge redevelopment of the RLD underway, seems to be getting back some semblance of life. Like the great lists here :-) and always like the input from locals, so I'll add my thing:
Just recently strolled once again through the Antwerp RLD. And though indeed much more limited (3 streets) as it used to be, at least the area was lively again.
Almost all windows seemed to be in use, but not all the girls were present (thursday early evening). Quite a lot of really good looking girls and actually almost none that don't look good.
Currently they are even building and renovating several houses in the streets, so the revival is defenitely starting.
Fun note: a friend of mine, working for a construction firm saw the plans of one of the new houses, there are full concrete beds.... certainly will last any action :-)

HOW TO GET THERE:
ask the taxi driver to take you to the RLD, no shame. Or ask for the Schipperstraat or the Falconplein.
You could go walking from the city centre, I would guess it's about 15 minutes from the cathedral.
The area is car-free but you can easily park on the river bank, some areas are free some are paying.
SAFETY:
IT's generally safe there, but you might want to be aware for pickpockets (and for a rip-off by the ladies, though that's very unlikely, and even then I think you don't have to worry stealing very much but maybe more some extra pay for extra service)
the neighbourhoud is very frequently patrolled by the police (I would say about every 10 mins), they go in the car-free area with police cars, or might just walk around there.
Late at night it might get a bit less an area you want to go (after 1 am).
PRICES:

When going for the lowest price, negociate clothing and actions, prices are more or less fixed.

I have been a few times to Antwerpen and each time I pay a visit to its RLD, which is not as big as Amsterdam's, but still worth visiting.
