Situation in South Thailand
I'm leaving today for south Thailand for a couple of days. Will find out the situation over there. Not using my normal Sungai Golok entry, a bit tense that side I guess. Taking a train ride via Padang Besar. Anyone been there last couple of days?

What a bad luck! I miss the train last night. Bought a new one and should be leaving tonight to Padang Besar. Hopefully to reach there tomorrow morning. Equipped myself with digital camera to catch the actions. I did that before when I was in Indonesia and PI. But erased them all. No idea then of keeping until I joined this forum recently. Hopefully to share with all mongers.
My normal entry point was Sungai Golok. I love the tracks there (Lorong Babi, Belakang panggung, Belakang Marina) and the hotels (Marina, Genting, Grand & Venice) and of course the Thai dishes. I still yearn to be there, but I avoid it now due to recent Sungai Golok bombings and Tak Bai incident. Sungai Golok has its specialty. Don't get me wrong. I had my fair share of screwing SW before in London, Damascus, Karachi, Mumbai, BKK, Jakarta, Surabaya, Manila and Cebu City. Gator420, thanks. |

Arriving at Padang Besar (Malaysian side) by train at 9.30am on the first day of my trip, I took a motorcycle ride readily available for RM3 (about 30Baht) to Padang Besar (Thailand). Being Malaysian, I needed no visa for entry. No hassle in the five minutes ride and dropped by near the 7-Eleven, the only one in town. Walking around town, I found Padang Besar had only a track exactly beside the 7-Eleven. There were less than 10 bars along it, a few hotels and a discotheque. I stayed at Satid Hotel, right in the middle of the track. The room rate was 400Baht per day. At the ground floor of the hotel, there was a massage parlor serving the normal “Thai Ancient Massage”. There were eight massage ladies, mostly in their late 20s or early 30s. A two-hour session would cost 30Baht. It’s pure massage without sex inside the parlor. However, if we engaged the lady in our hotel room, that could be arranged privately with her. Li Ling, a lovely massage lady at the parlor, asked for 1000Baht for an hour session with her.
I went to the bars just across Satid Hotel and found there were quite a number of ladies there. Beside Thais, I found out there were also Cambodians and Burmese too. The asking was between 1200 to 1800Baht for LT and an average of 500Baht for ST. My impression about Padang Besar, it was not affected by the security problem that succumbed in other parts of South Thailand. It was relatively safe to walk around town even during the night. The only disco “Discovery” was a hive of activity frequented by locals and Malaysians. The first day was a thumb-up. The second day was different story altogether. I will relate later. |

My second day in Padang Besar began at about 8.00am when Ah Not, a lady of 23 from Chiang Rai, Thailand whom I engaged for 1200Baht for LT the night before, woke me up to inform about returning back to her bar. I snapped two shots of her posing smilingly in the room that morning with my digitial camera. She left contented after tipping her 100Baht.
After a lunch of “kau suai” and “tomyam” at a stall across 7-Eleven, I walked around town passing through the market which was full of local Muslim ladies selling various kinds of fruits and vegetables in abundance. It was indeed a colorful sight which I caught in camera. The roads which I passed by in town were busy with local Thais and Malaysian “tourists” too. I saw many Malays, Chinese and Indians from Malaysia making their way to the few bars and crowded karaokes. But somehow I noticed something very unusual. There was not even a single policeman nor was a soldier to be seen in town despite of the security problems reported in South Thailand. Later I was made to understand that Padang Besar of Songkla province was not affected at all with the bombings and killings that took many lives in the other South Thailand provinces of Patani, Yala and Narathiwat. It is situated hundreds of kilometers away from the “battlefield”. On returning to Satid Hotel at about 4pm, I was approached by a captain of one of the bars across the hotel to browse through the ladies in his collection. I simply gave in and went for a look inside his bar. There were 6 ladies. I was taken in by the beauty of one and duly paid 1500Baht for LT. She was Ah Dah, 24 from Kompong Chom, Cambodia. Seemingly, all were in places from the very moment when she knocked the door of my hotel room. Wittingly, she allowed me to snap a couple of her pictures posing by the window curtain. She was strikingly attractive. I treated her more of a very special girlfriend rather than a sex worker. She deserved it. I had two very passionate sexual encounters with her. After midnight she dozed off and I left her in her dream. After watching the late movie, I proceeded to work with my laptop. It was to be the beginning of a traumatic experience. [I need a break. Please bear with it. I will definitely continue my report.] |

After midnight, while Ah Dah was asleep, I worked with the laptop with a view to save all pictures taken during the day. I then realized that I needed to change the batteries of my digital camera. After changing them, I made a test shot in the dimly-lighted room, flashing a brilliant light which abruptly awakened Ah Dah. She woke up and dressed up while continuously yelling at me which I could not understand, though I could “foot fasa Thai dye nitnoy”. I could pick up a bit of Thai. But I guessed she was cursing in her native Khmer language. I knew very well that there was a terrible confusion and misunderstanding on her part. She continued shouting abusively to me and packed her things hastily. I tried to console her about what had happened orally and in sign language to make her understand. I cajoled her to remain calm and stayed back. And I showed her my camera, trying to impress that nothing unusual happened. But I was in vain. She rushed out of the room and rudely slammed the door.
After she left, I continued working with the laptop then. Less than half an hour later, I heard loud banging knocks at the door. On opening the door, I was stunned by the presence of many men with intimidating looks staring at me and demanded to enter my room. One of the hotel staff was among them. Seven of them entered the room while a few remained outside. The youngest among them spoke fluent English. Bluntly he said, “My boss is here,” pointing to an early 40s tough guy in brown jacket. “You are in big trouble,” the youth quipped. By then I was surrounded by his henchmen. I anticipated the worst and my heart was pounding heavily for fear of being physically assaulted by them for unknown reason. But somehow I managed to gather composure and politely invited the boss to sit and asked him what the fuss was all about. I knew that it was going to be a long, long night for me judging by his henchmen reactions. They murmured among themselves on seeing my digital camera attached to the laptop. They then searched all parts of the room, curiously searching for something. They were visibly amazed when they found nothing else to show to their boss except for two used condoms in the dustbin. The boss did a lot of talking. The younger man interpreted. I was made to understand that Ah Dah returned to the bar crying profusely and met her boss. She complained that I abused her and accused me of taking naked picture of her while she was asleep. I was told that she wanted to lodge a police report against me. [To be continued. Please be patient, my “special” friend. Whatever your opinion, I respect your fundamental rights to agree or differ with anybody, anyway.] |

So that was what the fuss was all about. Ah Dah literally ran away when she thought I had snapped “naked picture of her” during her sleep. Under normal circumstances, she would have been beaten up if she simply left her customer without valid reason. That’s the rule, I guess.
But here, I am confronted with a different scene altogether. Right in the middle of the night, at a border small town of Padang Besar, surrounded by tough guys, accused of snapping phonographic picture of their girl, unable to speak their language well, I just relied on my calm composure and the “young interpreter”. I denied vehemently. I explained to them what actually took place. I invited them to browse all pictures in my digital camera and even in my computer. I showed to them every pictures stored in my laptop to impress them. Of course, I had snapped pictures of Ah Dah. But she was in full dress, nothing explicit or offensive about it. The other pictures snapped in Padang Besar were the market scene, the few bars at the single track in town and some ladies posing happily outside their bars. The boss was not satisfied with my explanation and evidence. He came out with the idea that I might doctor his girl picture to be superimposed on other nude photographs. I smelt rat about it and quickly thought about calling the police. I requested him to call the police then to investigate. I was told that the boss had already made contact with his “police friends” before he made his move to my room. His police friend did arrive later. He was a police detective after showing me his identification card upon my request. A smart detective by the way he worked on my international passport, digital camera and laptop; browsing over all destinations, pictures and files in quick succession. He erased all pictures taken in Thailand; the girls, the colorful market scene, the bars all gone in seconds. I did not protest. He gave a short "lecture" about the situation in the South. So I guessed, it was not wise to snap pictures around these days in view of the security problem. After that, he turned around talking to the boss who just nodded his head. I could pick up only words like “mypin lai, may die” (no problem, cannot), countries and entry points such as Manila, Jakarta, Hong Kong, Karachi, Islamabad, Kabul, Colombo, Padang Besar, Betong and Sungai Kolok. Evidently, the boss began to smile at me and quickly showed immediate respect. “You big mafia,” he said. The young interpreter told me that he apologized for whatever. And all his henchmen were seen smiling too. I was more taken aback by his broken English than his apology. He even made an offer to send a new girl that night. In fact, he could arrange for some girls too for nude photography! I gestured back to thank him and politely declined. He said I should drop by his bar for lunch with him the next day. I agreed. It was all over amicably after more than four hours since Ah Dah ran back. Before I left Padang Besar, I kept my lunch appointment with the boss. I queried about Ah Dah, only to be told that she would not be a “nuisance” anymore to anyone. To this day, I pitied her. She was ignorantly innocent. That was traumatic enough for me. [I left Padang Besar heading for Danok] |

I was lucky and more importantly I did nothing wrong, but then I don't think Ah Dah deserved the "punishment" for sheer ignorance and misunderstanding.

Thanks for the Excellent report !!!
Very interesting to read how you managed to get out of trouble. It's a good lesson. In a situation like that, specially in a foreign country, better stay calm and low profile !!! Hope the girl is ok... that's the kind of things we cannot control... |

Dannok
From Padang Besar, I left for Dannok, another town bordering Malaysia. I went there by hiring a private vehicle, a 4WD driven by a young Muslim Thai lad named Hasan who charged 300Baht for a single trip. The normal bus fare is only 20Baht. I impressed upon Hasan on what I was interested in at Dannok. He was most obliged to assist me. All along the way, he did all the talking about the women, the bars, the massage parlors and the discos there. Boy, I was truly excited after what I had gone through at Padang Besar the night before. The journey passed through Sadao, a small town serving as the administrative capital of Sadao Province which covers the border towns of Padang Besar and Dannok. Passing through the main street, I observed there were not a single bar or hotel at sight. Initially I had this idea of “tasting” Sadao, but common sense prevailed over my own curiosity. Sadao had nothing to offer unless you are into rubber products and timber. Hasan confirmed that. After passing long tracts of rubber trees on both side of the road, we reached Dannok. True to form, this small town bordering Thailand and Malaysia was truly impressive. It has all the prerequisite of any monger’s needs. First and foremost, the tracks were everywhere in town with fine ladies to offer. I observed there were over more than a hundred bars, discos and massage parlors. I stayed at three different hotels; Marina Inn (rate at 400Baht), IPD Hotel (400Baht) and New City Hotel (500Baht). Regarding the ladies, for LT the average price is 1500Baht. I spent four satisfying nights at Dannok. I could say that in terms of quality and quantity, after Hat Yai, Dannok is the second sex capital of South Thailand. This time around I did not shoot the girls with my digital camera, my buddy did. |
