The current drive against illegal immigrants by Malaysian authorities cause heavy traffic at the jetty from Kukup to Tanjung Balai.

mike, is it 100% safe to go on my own? or is it better if u take a tour guide along?

Mike, thanks for a great report. 5 years ago I did do Batam for 4 days and did experience some world class beauty but also a high degree of attitude. Am doing a leisurely monger tour of Asia late spring and will probably make time for your recommendations. Thanks again.

Yo Mike,
Kukup - Balai ferry fare now is RM70 (return). Fyi, thanks.

for a decent trip for 2 or 3 nights, how much would it cost me? including everything :
food, accomodation, travel; & girls??

Despite being alone, it's relatively safe there compared to KL's Bukit Bintang, Brickfields, Chow Kit or Sentul for that matter. But be careful with your wallet when inside the discos. I've known this "chopstick" disco maniac who is a professional pickpocket.Originally posted by sivasiva

Siva, a local guide is obviously helpful. On your debut, befriend your hotel cabbie. Tip him, and the whole of Karimun is your paradise.

Erratum
My posting Karimun 8 should read "Buy a return ticket boat ride (RM70) at the counter".Originally posted by patch1606

Dear Siva, agreed with Mike, careful with your wallet at all times to be safe and always keep your passport at the hotel's front desk.
As local guide, suggested using legal taxi, their counter (table) located immediately after immigration scan your bag. Taxi guy will wear blue uniform, with names and company crest, and rest assured he will take care of you from A to Z. Cheers

That's too much for the asking, Siva. You need to do your own calculation on the basis of my previous postings. Cost depends on your appetite, taste and lifestyle.Originally posted by sivasiva

Pound for pound, I would say generally, you'll incur less costs per day in Tanjung Balai compared to any of the border towns of south Thailand [if ever you've mongered there before].

Just to put across two meaningful words to you: HAPPY BIRTHDAY!Originally posted by cwchang

Mike, what is LT and ST?

Looks like I'll be heading to either Karimun or Batam during the CNY holidays...anyone going there during this time?
Abt the village girls, can we also bring them to our hotel room?

A monger’s guilt
Siva, I’ve gotten into this bad feeling of guilt for not responding to your specifics earlier.
So on second thought, here’s a mean costing outlay amounting RM280 (US73.69) for a day in Karimun.
1. Accommodation = RM100 (US26.32)
2. LT girl = RM100 (US26.32)
3. Food = RM50 (US13.16)
4. Travel = RM30 (US7.89)
I’m not taking into account your travel to Kukup/Tanjung Balai, incidentals and other variable expenses incurred during your stay.
LT is Long Time (an overnight with the girl) and ST is just for Short Time (normally an hour).
Stay focussed while in Tanjung Balai and keep on track, brother.

thx mike...
