I just looked a report on French TV yesterday. They made a law against sex tourism. Any foreigner who pays a girl for sex may end up in prison. they showed a few guys who were in prison for months - and that was not for having sex with underage girls, simply for fucking a whore that they picked in a bar!
The place was Nossy Be.

Now could somebody report more details. How big is the risk?

The Bottom line: By all means, go to Madagascar, I think every self respecting tourist should try it once in his life it's something special believe me!!( I'll explain more at the end )

But first I have to relieve your fears by telling you from my own experience:
it was the first time I tried "sex tourism" and I must admit I had to thailand the year after ( last summer ) ( I then returned to thailand for easter )

I didnt know these laws about Madagascar but at the same time I didnt brag around about getting girls and paying them so there' s no way I could have

About your fears there is no chance of getting caught red-handed ( or hooded for that matter ) by the police. Simply because like for instance in thailand you pay the girl after the act which is usually early in the morning late at night and nobody's behind you.

One thing to keep in mind though some girls wont behave like prostitutes ( except that they 'll come with you and will blow your brains out in bed) they wont show their hand until it's time to ask for money. and at that point you can go "oh I thought you were my girlfriend" but one thing you shouldnt do is refuse to pay. Why? because one guy in my area was sent to jail accused of being a sex tourist by a girl..

Why? he refused to pay her. What does he think? he's coming to Africa.. and Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world. The girls are counting on vasahas ( farangs) to improve their living. if you dont want to pay you are of no use for them. And their prices is about 10 euros long time ( whole night ) means of transport being what they are girls tend to stay in your bed until morning )took two girls in Tana for my last night well resting wasn't easy they both chose to stay in my bed and there wasnt room enough to move and need to move a lot I shouldnt offered them to stay but the streets of tana are not always safe at night and I'm a real gentleman

About being framed: Never happened to me well I never followed strangers in the middle of the night so I dont know. You should know that the problem of child prostitution is real in Mada. Like in thailand hotels will check for ID of girls ( no over night guest charge ) some security guys are cool you can befriend them others are cold all will check IDs In general I found the Malygasy laidback relaxed friendly I really liked them. Better than the thai who are nice but you never know. In Mada you dont get framed from having marijuana like in thailand so I would think one would get in trouble for a good reason. Oh exceptions are cops and military they will stop your taxibrousse and check for your ID. I would love to go there

The girls are much more spontaneaous than thai girls
malygasy girls dont all sport a wide smile trust me that those who do sport a lovely smile go for them the bitchy ones wont do you good. They seem to be more genuine in their relationship with you. with a Mada girl you wont be annoyed by strange behaviour and things like keeping face even though being respectful and friendly will open doors. As I said they wont get annoyed if you ask for two but it's not necessarily worth it but the two girls had never been together with one man no lesbian show but they were giggling while looking at the other in action. It was a very friendly night ending with multiple snuggle.

However if you are looking for the lesbian show this is what happened to me.. when? on the first night!!! ( ok second we slept on the first but first night out ) we went to a disco called ravenale ( means travellers tree it's a local tree many plants and beasts in Madagascar only exist there ) well sorry to disgress. We went to this disco in Mahajunga in the north west.
at the top of the stairs there is a bar with only prostitutes if the girls downstairs are not enough. Wellll they are not too pushy but they do want to talk upstairs One was a bit stickier than wished though and I went to see a sexy gal looking like a girl from a r"n"b video I chatted with her and her friend a lovely tall gal and they offered to "faire cochon" if you are french you understand they are offering to do dirty stuff together at that time sticky come and they insist she's their friend she has to come along
being here for the first time I dont feel like turning down offers so here we go I walk out to the short time hotel nearby with three babes in my arms with a a stupid grin on my face and everybody's looking at me there they got some big bath tube we get the four of us in they wash me then we tried all combinations I can't help having that stupid smile on my face as I recall that experience between the most pleasant experience I've ever had in my life I think Once more compared to thai girls they are less expert at getting touchy feely but they are wild wild wild

One thing my history teacher didnt mind my taking her to the bar beer in ambotoa ( or something like that ) "thee" spot on Nosy Be More infamous than the capital of the island: Hellville ( you can't beat a name like that though ) there my friend was requested to pay a drink for the one he liked and all her friends and soon grew tired of it Lots of girls getting around though and no bar fines to pay there's also a disco and we went to another bar with a dance floor lots of girls there too. most in the 18 22+ range

So, I will conclude that lengthy field report by "why then havent I gone back there?" well... you can go to tana ( the capital city ) and hang up with expats much friendlier than Bangkok ( smaller ) ( all the places are small there except the land) you can go to the discos and all the girls will want you: crossing the barto go to the toilet will be an african adventure more impressive than a crocodile infested lake! you can become mad it looks like everyone wants you: to give you an example I did the sexy girl behind the desk of the hotel I wanted from day one. ( she was surprised I didnt dare ask her at once ) oh and she did massages too One thing is that they don't perform oral sex in tana it is taboo for them. May come from the fact they dont use condoms for oral but it's ok in the north. Well the north appeared wilder to me and the place to go if you are in for the sex. and problem is... reaching the north is not the tourist spot next door. you can go by plane but you have to book ahead and it's not cheap like airasia in thailand for instance
then, you have taxi brousse and this is the african adventure you were dreaming of may be but truth it's a real ordeal you have to go through if you want to visit the north. ordeal? well it can be nice I met a girl in one but in some places the road is completely destroyed it looks like the surface of the moon the taxi brousse is like a minivan where they cram as many people as they can we were forty once.... once we went to a national park for a day it was night when it was time to look for time go back to hotel and we waited more than an hour for a ride home we really thought we'd sleep there but we found a ride at the back of a truck we must have been twenty crammed like I had never been crammed before
and the state of the vehicles: you are never sure to arrive you are never sure you'll survive if you have a serious accident you are sure to die they have no helicopters in madagascar to take you to a hospital
so this country has no infrastructure at all travelling to thailand is easier that's why I never returned can't do indiana jones every vacation but I would love too eventually really left with a image of this country

sex tourism yes but not with children. (telling it from memory) so I dont think you should worry too much about the consequences of getting willy out in your hotel room. Madagascar is not Iran. even though a lot of the malygasy disapprove of sex tourism giving a bad image of their country

you will be in heaven.. the only thing is that as I stated, it is a very rough country.. very poor infrastructures they were counting on the chinese to finish the road but they shifted to a site in south africa and there is a section of the road which is just broken like you cannot imagine.

to advise you I would have to know how old you are and your priorities.
I may suppose that mongering will be one of them.
I love tana the atmosphere can be quite decadent.. the only place where I banged the hotel clerk girl. I know how to get back to the hotel but I dont remember the exact name something like hotel albert. This hotel is quite a slum ( some stains on the bedsheets didnt go when they were washed ) but the atmosphere was great. the owner is a french guy who has been around and can give you a lot of useful advice. I liked him and I would definitely go there to grab useful info before I went all the way to the north. In particular what are the good companies to travel around. we should have checked for the taxi brousse because the one we took to come back all the way from diego suarez took more than 24 hours. and believe me you dont want to be 24 hours in a taxi brousse but by that time we were used to it and patiently waited to be back. you may not want to take a taxi brousse tho I would perfectly understand that
I might choose another means of transport next time but I will miss a very genuine experience you have to try it once even if it's for a short time I wouldnt recommand going all the way from majunga to Nosy Be by taxi brousse if it could be avoided unless they have repaired the road the bumpy ride can be fun but it forces the vehicles to go slow as well. tana ( the capital) to majunga was 11 hours that's the time I took to go from Strasbourg northeast of france to Barcelona north east of Spain
that's not so bad because you can see the landscape look at the people talk etc. the lunch breaks are not cosy you have rice and some tiny bits of meat. yes this is africa and meat is a luxury there but dont worry you can afford to take meat twice. Otherwise they have plenty of rice and lots of rice pads everywhere. I have found lots of common points with thailand but the country is not as developed no infrastructures etc.. it's amazing when you get to nosy be and you get a continental breakfast lol except they charge it continental prices too...

It was two years ago I forgot the name of some hotels and the prices it seemed to me that the hotels are cheaper in thailand strangely enough. dont know where guide book is will google things up..
the owner of the hotel is rarely there he runs a bar restaurant where food is pretty decent( he's french ) and you can have good conversations ( but I'm french ) with the expats there and a few local girls I had seen at discos hang there too. I am sure that guy speaks english he's a traveller after all.
there are a few discos you can go to there is also a bar restaurant club called glacier if I remember well even during the day you can see girls sitting at tables eyeing you at night it's hard to go to toilets without being grabbed hollered at etc there's also a disco which is pretty good I think the second girl I got there worked there too I didnt go to indra it's supposed to be the monger place in tana we already had hands full without going there ( had two girls just from staying at hotel ) I wish I did because I have been told it's got a typical malygasy atmosphere ( they have a typical sexy afro-carribean music a bit like zouk which can be nice for party )

Nosy Be I didnt enjoy myself to the fullest as mentioned but funnily enough the beer bar we first fine was exactly like a beer bar in thailand with the girls playing pool and the vasaha ( farang ) resident playing live music. one more thing or two , there has been some political unrest lately leading to the destitution of the president ( good thing if you wanna know my opinion all the people we talked to hated him; poor people, girls ) you may want to get an update on the political situation before going I have a friend who works there now and they have been pretty scared by the situation his wife wanted to go back home. I dont know the new president may be cooler now He is like 36 and I've been told he's an ex DJ dont know if it's true he was also the mayor of tana the capital city( antananarivo ) but you never know. the situation can freak out again.
Look when I was in thailand for easter ( and songkran ) , I thought I would be ok because the yellow t shirts who had blocked the airport had long got what they wanted. Unfortunately riots broke a few days after I was there the red tshirt wanted power back. after a few deaths a few buses set on fire ( some minister even got his car attacked by bullets ) thing got more quiet as the army took control of the situation. you never know, the former president ravalomanana may want power back to.

Last thing november will be summer not sure it makes a big difference as winter is pretty hot in africa. well the highlands ( tana ) is a bit fresh during august I wouldnt be surprised if it's way way hot in tana you may want to take a hotel with air con ( not the one I went to )

ok more I have read report of mugging of tourists in Nosy Be you'd have to be careful I hear it's not recommended to walk on the beach at night in Ambatoalak
( pronounced Ambatoolook) this place is still considered the mongering place in Nosy Be and "Le Billiard " ( never got the difference between pool snooker and Billiard is pool what we play in thailand and about everywhere? ) well Le Billiard is still running well I hear your Hotel will have security anyway. Never have trouble myself but I was always hanging with girlfriend and with my friend. got pretty drunk at billiard though. Just be on the look out, be nice well the usual commonsense recommendations I'm not teaching anything new here. I would advise a hotel with good security though? We were at coucher de soleil ( Sunset ) bungalows, run by a couple from Switzerland ( divorced now actually one of them went back home ) It is situated in the heighths so if the weather is nice one canl have a nice sunset before going out. There are wood fences and guards ( they were cool though )
But no hot water and certainly not air con... what can I say the north of Mada and especially Nosy Be has big problems with power. In some villages only the local bar open at night with tv and running on a power generator will have light. Dont be surprised to find candles in your room you will need them
Hey that's Africa! let's be glad we have water (for drinking water: in bottles!) but dont worry there are no lions. there are big turtles at the sunset bungalows though ( coucher de soleil) mind your step at night
well you can go to a more expensive hotel they even have power generators but they are very expensive. Besides the bungalows are uphill but really not too far from the night scene 5 no 2 minutes It's not a big hill Ambatoaloka is a very small place it is often presented at the riviera of Madagascar but I've heard people go on the beach to have their shit and it's not very clean I don't remember noticing that when I was there so it's not so bad just once again mind your step and dont go on the beach at night or buy a lightorch!
One thing to keep in mind is that due to power shortage (you'll notice that they dont have often power during the day) you may not be sure that food has been frozen properly so I would recommend to eat seafood and fish freshly fished from the sea There is also zebu the local cow. same same as thailand but theirs are bit skinnier
On the topic of beach you really have to go on a day tour on boats to visit the surrounding islands which are nicer in my opinion ( except we went down on the beach of an island with lemurian park and that beach was littered with cutting trash like broken glasses and open cans mind your step! the beach we stopped at for lunch was paradise, except for the sunburns. you can rent a mask to snorkel very nice fish and coral. we payed 100,000 ariaries
today it's 37 euros in those days it was 66 my my it's getting interesting it's a bit like the girls will be twice as cheap well I'm forgetting that euros may not be your currency oops if I remember well a girl in Majunga ( lesbian play ) (short time ) was 30,000 then (20 euros then 10 euros or 15 dollars girls were usually cheaper. 20,000 ( I payed 25,000 each for the two girls that slept in my bed that was my only money left heh that didnt seem to be a problem for them so I guess they are used to be paid less - something to investigate ) I gave 20,000 for the girl in diego I payed for a food and hotel too the only thing she ever asked me was a coke I think can you believe that girl cried when I left? I have been looking at the prices and there are international flights to Nosy Be that might interest you because the prices I saw were similar to prices to Tana. ( you probably fly to tana and get another to nosy Be ) You may want to comtemplate that solution since it wont cost you any money and will spare you the ordeal of going in a taxi brousse ( though I would recommend you try it on a short trip part of your visiting experience ) However you'd still have to get around if you want to go out of Nosy Be I dont recommand speedboats if you have lot of luggage you can rent a car to go to diego it's much faster than taxi brousse and you are alone in an air con - some woman going to Diego Suarez offered to share her car ( rented with chauffeur ) it was a good deal though we stopped in ambilobe to visit the national park nearby which I would recommend to someone who likes trekking in nature ( big bat cave the famous tsingy( impressive ) the lemurians baobabs etc. very tiring walk though. There is also a smaller park near the crossing between the road to majunga and the road to Nosy Be but that park got crocodiles. Anyway I wouldnt go to Majunga from Nosy worst road ever. I'd rather go from Tana lol

Tana is nice it's like a return to civilisation lol although at first contact after coming from the plane we were appalled by the poverty the squalor but that's what the bus station's like so and we really wanted to dart to Majunga
I dont know what experience you have from your backpacking days but I had never seen that before However after coming from our two weeks trip we were used to it and anyway it's much better downtown, what a surprise! civilized! internet access! wow ( we found some net cafés in backwater places but a lot of girls had never been on a computer )

Finally if I were you I'd check if November is in the rainy season or not.( I think it's more on the side of february but dont quote me onthat ) The rainy season in Madagascar is not nice warm moonsoon shower for an hour of the day it's about typhoons and cyclones I know that some roads have been damaged in Nosy Be so it would concern you. you really should check that out

the official rainy season is december to april but it can start in november if it's early the cyclone are more on the eastern coast and the road are usually impraticable but in the north it's more like a moonsoon they say ( well I saw damage done by cyclone in Nosy Be but it must be rare )

Tana (antananarivo) the capital worth a visite and a good place to find escort girl and shorttime girls.

Majunga is a good place too but a bit out of tourist path, so its a non pro area for mongering. and there is a beach.

er.. no, about majunga there is a very pro scene if you go to the ravenale: where I got three girls and they dont just sit there and wait for their turn they perform full lesbian sex ( kissing pussy licking ) at your command
