    Is it getting worse?

Pattaya...we know it's full of the World's arseholes in high season and yours truly just managed to stay out of trouble the last time.

The other day I got talking to a good friend who has lived there for 7 years and he was drinking at a bar in Soi 2 when this happened...
He went to the toilet and gave the toilet keeper ten baht. The toilet keeper handed him 5 one baht coins. My friend (rather stupidly IMO) asked him for a five baht coin.
The toilet keeper told him to leave and after a few heated words my friend got punched in the face.
He said he was going to call the Police at at that moment, seven Thais surrounded him and threatened to beat him.

As a result of this he reckons the safety factor is gone and they absolutely hate us.

I kinds sit on the fence and know he's half right. They do mistrust and dislike Foreigners. But if I said all Thais then this surely would not be true.

I reckon He was crazy doing what he did. He's known to be argumentative and gets away with it from bar girls but apparently not Thai Males.

Checking back on some of the stuff he read in the local news. Make your own minds up, here's some of the deaths and incidents since the year begun.

There's just a few happenings. Has it always been like this or are the high number of tourists making them go loopy!

Me...I think it's getting worse and they are getting bolder. Last Month the girl I was with was groped by a Thai motorbike driver. He was sitting DRUNK, drinking, waiting for a customer.

Rock, these stories on the face of it would put anyone of visiting but people who are a bit more savvy realise that most of the incidents could have should have been easily avoided. Drink as you say has a huge part to play in it also people not knowing when to walk away from any possible confrontation with a Thai national. I wonder how many of these incidents happen to first time visitors who didn’t do enough or the right kind of research and only when they are waking up in hospital realise it’s not the Costa’s.

Read most of the news reports and most of the participants are pissed or high or both, I must admit that there seems to be an upward trend but also a lot of Thai on Thai violence.

With the increase in visitor numbers (if TOT are to be believed) I wonder if it’s just the same % wise or a real increase in reported crime.

Also the headline “Bloke Goes Out And Has A Fantastic Night” will not sell newspapers.

Most people do have a fantastic time, let's be honest.

But...I did notice changes in attitude. The motorbike driver that groped the girl I was with was just one example. I'm clever enough to know that if I would have took a swing at Him the other half dozen with him would have set about me. Instead I spoke to him in Thai and told him I wouldn't do that to his Wife and what he did was bad for Thailands image to tourist. He just looked at me half pissed and the rest said nothing.

Now now now...what if someone never knew how to handle it? they would have been viciously beaten, that's for sure.

And if it would have been my Wife I would have gave him a good slap.

I say that they are NOT reporting most of what happens. Not vice versa.

Like I said before..you have to tread on eggshells and eat humble pie if you want to stay safe in Thailand.
Apart from the night I nearly got into a fight with a Thai gambling for money and playing pool and the groper I have never had a problem. But I'm not a confrontational person. I like to have a laugh and smile a lot.

I would say that Pattaya is definitely NOT safe for lone females. There have been a few Foreign Women raped in the last three or four years and that's just what's reported.

It's still safe enough for the lonesome monger, but areas like third road (I used to drink in Thai bars there) are definitely not safe at all.

I remember reading news reports three or four years ago, noticing that all the violence seemed to be Thai on Thai, gang wars, drug related, etc.
This surprised me very much when I first started to follow the Pattaya news.

I tried to figure out in my head why foreigners hardly ever seemed to be involved.
I reasoned that the Thais had the mentality, "Don't bite the hand that feeds you."

These days are now over. It's surprising and alarming if you remember what it was like then and compare it to now. But it's no surprise if you compare it to many cities around the globe as opposed to "Pattaya then".

It's not "NOW" that's deviating from the world norm of seedy locales, it was "THEN".
    "What kind of erection, sir?"
    "A rip-roaring hard on, ma'am. It was a rip-roaring one."

Sorry Rocky but I would put that on my “Stupid Things To Do In Thailand” List

If you put yourself in a high risk situation and it turns bad you have no one to blame but yourself. I avoid Thai Pubs and clubs on the whole for that reason unless I’m going with a Thai I trust. Remember what is pocket change to you or me is a days wage to a Thai.

There’s a couple of bars where I will play pool with the bar man or DJ but I will never play for money with a Thai male. Some times we play for a beer but I always make sure it evens out or I get the extra one in. I gave up playing pool in this country because the young lads started making trouble when you thrashed them.

Also don’t play KP………………. bloody shark

Well you don't know the circumstances do you. It was a bar beside the Dollhouse ago-go. I was there with my Wife, playing pool minding my own business.
The owner is a Policeman and He came in and sat down with a few locals.

One guy asked me to play him. I said ok and we played for 20 baht a game. My Wife was the banker holding the money. It soon escalated and went to 200-500 baht a game.
It was all eachy peachy and I started pulling ahead winning a few games. He tried to cheat my Wife out of 500 baht and she went nuts, shouting and swearing at him. He tried to grab her and I grabbed him by the throat.

A big Thai came from nowhere and rather than take his side He covered the pool table and asked everyone to leave.

No way was I going to stand by and let this cheating cunt try to slap my Wife. Would you?

Research any major city in the World and you could find multiple reports similar to the ones Rocky posted.

pattaya will always be a smoldering cesspit !

its a great place to go and empty your balls for a couple of weeks
as for living there full time thats another matter
its known all over the world as one big brothel town and attracts "lowlifes"
    from everywhere
whether it be the sad expat cheap charlie who moves from bar to bar just
for the happy hour or the ex gangstar type who has just opened a go-go bar

pattaya has it all and most of it seems to be from the lower end of the scale

I agree that from what I've seen Pattaya has it all. And yes, quite often the scale tips in the direction that you mentioned.

No Rocky what I’m trying to say is I would not have got into that situation in the first place I.e. playing a Thai national especially a stranger for money. You put yourself and your wife in that position by not realising when a fun game got serious.

Maybe. But do you call Pattaya a Major City? Look at the size of the place. I can walk around it in a couple of hours KP. Drunk or sober

What bothers me is the ease at which locals have and carry firearms. A farang would be jailed for life. They even have grenades!

An American has just been caught selling Kamagra and He will face a jail term then deportation. Something you can buy from any Thai in a pharmacy or on the street.

And crimes against Foreigners very often go unpunished.

Same as Blackpool and I would guess that there is more trouble on a Saturday night in Blackpool than Pattaya.
