    New Smoking Laws

It would appear that some bars are flouting the new no smoking laws, Angel Witch has a no smoking policy but I went into another well known Go-Go bar and it was smoking as usual.
It will be interesting to see if the police bother to enforce this law or whether they will simply take backhanders to ignore it.

I suppose only time will tell, so far it only seems to be partly enforced, I am not sure who gets fined, the smoker or the bar owner.

What...like how they enforce the wearing of helmets or four Thais sitting on a motorbike or all the Thais and farangs that get pissed and drive their pick ups!

How they enforce and lock up every girl selling her ass in Thailand!

Thailand's quite a Lawless Country. There's no way on Earth they are going to enforce a no smoking ban.

But the Police will use it to collect extra wages now and then when the tourists are thin on the ground.

I wish they would enforce it. Gets right up my nose.

Mmmh, I guess it would be a great thing for non smokers to be able to enjoy a gogo visit without being forced to inhale the smoke of other guests.
But as a smoker I am pretty upset with this new law. I think that Thailand has other priorities to care about first, in the health department, such as air pollution (all those songthew around pattaya makes the air unbreathable, and that concerns everybody), alcool abuse, drugs, driving security, ect.
I'm curious to see if this law will have an effect on the number of costumers of gogo bars and discos...
Ready for another turn on the merry-go-round. From 27 october 'till april at least

They are not flouting it yet.

There is a 3 month grace period which expires at the end of May and from 1st June it should be fully enforced. No smoking in air conditioned areas, or areas with less than 3 open sides.

Whether it will be fully enforced is yet to be seen, although they have been stopping people in Pattaya for using phones whilst driving and not wearing crash helmets.

It wont be strictly enforced, trust your Uncle Jim, it will just be another opportunity to earn tea money, Thai police are crooks, everyone knows that.

They also do that on the junction of Soi 4 Bangkok, not exactly same, same as smoking is it.

re:New Smoking Laws- A Clarification please

I am hoping that smoking in open Beer Bars is still officially allowed. I have several good cigars in my travel humidor that I plan to enjoy on my next trip.

Thais are quite a Lawless race of people. I don't want to generalise but you only have to look at the helmet wearing or lack of it. The three on a bike etc etc.
If you go down to Jomtien at the weekend it's full of drunken Thais driving 4X4 trucks and so on.

The Police will use this Law to make money for themselves.

I don't believe it will be enforced properly.

    Spot on.

Porn is illegal in Thailand however some of the traders on Sukhumvit Road are now actually displaying porn DVD's, they are not even under the counter.

Counterfeit goods are also illegal, in Patpong I saw "Rolex" watches on display at 350 baht.

You can't buy a beer in 7/11 after midnight but you can buy illegal beer all night outside the Nana Hotel.

It goes on and on --------

Jimmy...As found out last week...even the mobiles, Nokia, Sony etc in the shops, malls are ALL COPIES. They told my Wife, not me.

Everything's a copy here, Laws don't matter. Only bribery. It's Thailand and it's 3rd World. Always will be in our lifetime.
