Have posted before including a bad experience a few years ago in Budapest where I was ripped off in an ordinary bar, surprisingly. Hope the same thing wont
happen again here in Bulgaria.
I'm not into what I call those sleazy basement type of strip joints but any bars where the girls are only there for one thing, I'm more than interested!!

I'm leaving Sofia tomorrow, and should like to share a couple of experiences. On arrival at the Kempinski Hotel (where I stayed), a little guide was provided (restaurants, pubs, cultural activities, etc.) called "City Sofia". There is also a section listing "Erotic Bars" and "Escort Services". I tried one of each. The first one was "Bohemy" (www.kontesa.net; the web site is in English and Bulgarian, and is actually 2 different places.) The cost was 50 leva per hour (about US $35), and wasn't worth a cent of it. I chose Simone (can't see her face on the web site). She has a decent figure, but boobs like deflated balloons and ugly as a barrel of arseholes. Kissing is not allowed, nor did she want to be touched. After a perfunctory CBJ, I just wanted to bust a nut and be shot of her. So, I paid for an hour but only had her 45 minutes. It was more than long enough.
The next night I went to the Velvet bar (5 leva entrance fee, located at 12 -14 Slaveikov St.), but none of them really appealed to me, so I finished my drink and left.
Last night I went with a mate of mine to Kama Sutra (19 Dondukov Blvd.). Again, there's a 5 leva entrance fee. I found the girls to be better looking than at the Velvet Bar, so I told the manager which one I liked, paid the manager 100 leva for an hour, got in a taxi and went back to the hotel. The Kempinski Hotel adds a surcharge of 20 euros to your bill if you bring a girl back to your room, plus you have to sign a waiver and assume all responsibility if she takes the hotel apart.
Anyway, although this girl was better looking by far than the first one, the service was just as bad.
If you're into Slavic women (I am), this is not the place to go. Very few of the pros I saw are Slavs; the majority are Gypsies. I suppose if one is willing to pay 400 or more euros per hour, one can get a high-quality woman; I'm not willing to pay that, so I got stuck with the dregs. This is not a place I'd come to if I was looking just to monger. I've been told Romania is better. I'll be there next month.
I almost forgot; avoid the Playboy Club in the Kempinski Hotel. When you go in, you're set between 2 (very attractive) women. To have them sit with you, you have to buy them a drink. They start by offering the most expensive, which is almost 2,000 leva (US $1,300) for a 3-litre bottle of champagne. The cheapest drink is 99 leva. I paid 32 leva for a drink and the 10 leva entrance fee, then got the hell out. I didn't try any of the other hotels, but I'd bet it's the same.

Thanks, Paul. Other guys have sworn by Velvet Bar; it's just one of the occupational hazards of the hobby, I guess; a place that's grand today may be rubbish 2 months from now.
As for the €20 fee the Kempinski charges, either they forgot or don't really mean it. At any rate, they didn't charge me €40 extra. (How to explain that at the finance office? )

Hotel Sveta 4 Star property but I would give it 3.
Mid sized hotel in excellent location. Staff efficient
But I wouldn’t say friendly.
Close to on main road Hotel Maria Luisa. Much smaller
property but friendlier with quite a plush interior. Best to
pay a little extra for a larger room here but still deserves
its 4 star rating.
Two ‘Wanaby’ Hiltons I visited, ie tall and modern with casino,
Health club, decent bar:
Princess Hotel. On wrong side of the tracks but good facilities
Or Rodina hotel at a slightly better location.

But best hotel for location, facilities and a magnet for freelancers
has got to be Radisson SAS Grand hotel. Unfortunately not
cheap though.

Have recently returned from Sofia for the long Easter Weekend, and here’s my pennies worth.

As a new place to visit, and despite a few teething problems, I found this city
both charming and inexpensive and within reason, quite safe.
With beautiful old architecture and old trams still rattling through the streets, Sofia met all my expectations as how I imagine any Eastern European medium-size city with character to be like, but with comforts too from the ‘West’ thrown in, but at considerably lower prices. Smart bars and restaurants; wide, wide choice of night clubs and sex clubs and a good choice of centrally situated 4 to much better 5 star hotels (best booked cheaper through the internet).
The girls are attractive and available, if you know where to look, and have no attitude yet but this will no doubt change as Bulgaria progresses further into the European Union and prices start to go up.

But first thing first. In looks what is typical of a Bulgarian girl?
The impression I got and this might be due to a previous long Turkish occupation is
slightly dark skinned/ or pale white almost gothic completions usually with black straight or black curly hair.
I found their English too, to be fair or just to-get-by. The ones I spoke to were sociable and friendly to foreigners. Very sexy dress sense with some blatant cock teasing too from some of the younger ladies I saw out and about wearing the shortest of skirts.
Other nationalities I encountered tended to be from the nearer Eastern European/European countries like Romania, Hungary and Greece.

Summary of 4 Night trip.

Arrived Late Saturday night so the good part of one evening was wasted before I got there. Just bad trip planning on my behalf.

Came in on Austrian airways and was already feeling horny. From my aisle seat I couldn’t take my eyes off one beautiful young blonde cabin crews beautiful legs!

Had car transfer service pre booked from the hotel for 20 Euros. Journey into town and to the hotel took about twenty minutes but as I arrived my heart sank. My 4 star hotel (that should have only been 3 stars and sometimes 2), looked dead and so did the centrally located position on Pirotska Street which was as dark and gloomy as the hotel looked..
Nothing like the glossy internet presentation with busy reception and bar area. The health club with the young massage girls, again advertised, turned out to be closed and for two days the reception was manned by two pissed off looking males who made it quite clear that they would have liked to have been somewhere else for the Easter Weekend.
Worse still, the single room allocated to me was small, depressing, with two tiny single child sized beds and despite there being only a handful of other guests staying I finally got moved to a better room but much smaller, but only after a long delay including hanging around reception while the duty manager sat in the bar talking to his girlfriend.
Lesson to be learnt here:
This is what can happen when you pay for your full stay in advance, otherwise I would have checked-out that very night. As a rule I think, any special deals paid over the internet, no matter what stars the hotel claims to have, tends to be for the most shittiest rooms.
If you really do have to pay in advance, then stick with the well known hotel chains.

So at about 11.30 pm Saturday night, loaded with a bit of background information I set out on foot from the hotel and hit the darkened streets.
Big mistake as it was Easter Weekend.
My intention was to start off at a bar on Vitosha Boulevard, but got a little backtracked as a bright neon sign flashing down some dark side street turned out to be not a bar or night club but a closed shop selling anything from dishwasher parts to office supplies.
Once on Maria Luzia Boulevard (The part which meets Vitosha Boulevard) which is technically the very center of downtown Sofia I hit the crowds which included church goers carrying lighted candles. From a religion point of view very nice but what about the night time entertainment? When I asked someone I was told people would start going out around midnight/1am.
The bar I wanted and eventually found on foot turned out to be, after much confusion, a new casino so I got straight into a taxi and went to Sin City a large disco complex with several bars offering different music.
The place was packed with young people with a few freelancers sitting at the bar. If you are into loud music you might like the place. I was more interested in just getting a drink
and getting out the place, for me it was a bit too loud.
About 1.30am left and caught a taxi back to Vitosha Boulevard and checked out the Fetish Club. Hardly anyone in, the best ladies I’m sure were somewhere else for the weekend and those available were nothing to write home about. Had one expensive beer under the watchful eye of half a dozen staff and left.
Walked to another bar which was down a side street called Tiffany Club. Quite nice in side but not many people there. Sat at the long bar, had a couple of drinks and watched the live singer and a few people dancing before calling it a night.

Sunday.
Breakfast at the hotel was a very gloomy affair with diluted orange squash as part of the breakfast buffet. After I served myself and put everything onto my table, including a hot cup of coffee, I then went to the men’s room and on my return noticed the staff had removed everything so I had to start all over again. No apology. Nothing. And there was only two other diners in there, it was not as if the hotel was busy.
The best part of the morning was wasted as I tried to get an English language local paper and (or) a What’s On Guide or magazine in English. Even finding a shop open was a problem and the few outlets selling newspapers that were open were run by older people who could not speak English.
Had a basic city map with me but soon noticed nearly all the Street signs in Sofia are not in English as shown on the map but in the Russian Cyrillic alphabet.
Of course, and why did I think of this earlier, the solution to get any English reading material when in a foreign city is to head to the nearest 4/5 star hotel where they are sure to have some sort of gift shop/news stand in the lobby.
But for a different reason, in need of a massage, I took a taxi to the Sofia princess hotel where I had a very good 40 minutes full body massage for 36 lev in the hotel health club.
Very professional but clinical service given by a about a 19 year old tall blonde who would probably have won Miss World if she had entered it. Sadly, though, no extras with me lying there totally naked.
Afterwards bought a newspaper in the hotel and looked through the classified section over coffee in the lobby.
3 escort services were listed. Rang 2 who did not answer but the 3rd one did who informed me that there was no way any girl would be available until at least Monday evening as most of the girls were out of town for the Easter holiday.
Then to take my mind off things and feeling disappointed as it was becoming clearer that I may have fucked up on this trip I did a bit of sightseeing and a lot of walking.

I don’t think I was at the wrong places at the wrong time so much, but more perhaps at the right places but at the wrong time - Easter weekend. I was very lucky indeed with the street action but had I not been, the trip could have been a disaster.

I have chosen not to give the name of the hotel I stayed at for some of the reasons above. In fairness, in better times, it might be a nicer hotel with friendlier staff (or would it??) The name didn’t start with an R or a T and I think it’s the only 4 star property on that street.

Regarding hotels;
This is the feedback I got from some of the locals and added to this some of my comments where applicable.
For 5 star, position wise and money no object, the best place to stay is the Radisson SAS.
A closer second is the nearby new Grand Hotel Sofia. Even bigger rooms but a disappointing Lobby area.
The standard rooms at the Sheraton Sofia, again in the center, are too small and not worth the money. I was told this several times.

Both the Hilton and Kempinski have great rooms and sometimes offer good weekend deals but are too far out.

For 4 star suggestions;
These are both tall and modern hotels but with small basic standard rooms.
Sofia Princess has good facilities but shame about the location.
Hotel Rodina could be its twin sister. Slightly better location but still not perfect.
Just a warning about the smaller hotels. Some girls might not be comfortable going back with you.

But If you do go to Sofia,
Enjoy and don’t forget the baby oil.
