Nearly half of men who pay for sex already have a partner, according to a new survey.
Survey: Ever Pay For Sex?
One in 10 of the men surveyed for the study admitted paying for sex. The participants' average age was 34.
Most of the respondents said that they had paid for sex with women. More than half said that they had paid for sex while abroad, but 4 out of 10 said they had paid for sex locally. The study was conducted in the United Kingdom.
Two thirds of the participants admitted paying for sex in the preceding year, and nearly 25 percent said that they repeatedly used prostitutes.
Almost half, 43 percent, said that they had a current partner when they had paid for the sex.
And more than half, 56 percent, who said that they had paid for unprotected vaginal sex already had a partner. Unprotected vaginal sex was more common among those who paid for sex while abroad, but unprotected oral sex was twice as common among the men who paid for sex locally.
The authors pointed out that diseases can be transmitted during oral sex.
Although none of the respondents had HIV, one in five had a sexually transmitted infection, including gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and syphilis, the study reported.
The authors suggested that the figures may be an underestimate of actual behavior as some men may choose not to reveal whether they have paid for sex.
The small survey was reported in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections.
The authors used survey data from a standard health screening questionnaire completed by more than 2,500 men at one sexual health clinic between October 2002 and February 2004.
