You'll need to get friendly with some local guys for the best places to go. Most of us 'occasional' tourists only go to the tourist parts and are not privy to the places that the locals go.

Me and 3 mates once got too preoccupied with beer one night, and when we staggered out of where ever we were it was about 4am and not even a strung-out katoey in sight.
Some cab driver took us to a few places tucked away near Siam Sq. They were sad sad holes and the poverty was clearly grinding. (Anybody who walks about 50 metres down a covered-over shanty marketplace off any main road will find this tragic Thailand.) As 'stingy' as I am, It's not where I'd go back.

Thai 'walk-in brothels' in the price range you are looking for are easy to spot, essentially they are Thai 'Beerbars' or Karaoke joints with lots of Christmas Tree lights or Vegas-style neon out front. And ST rooms in house, out the back, or nearby. Naturally, when you go in to order your Mekong or Chang, your Thai skills would be 'better than average', and you can look forward to a good fight, possibly to the death, with some drunk Thai who feels that you may be going a bit too far by stepping into his local and fucking 'his' girls. But don't let that stop you, what's a knife in the kidneys? BKK hospitals and ER's are really world class!
