I'm frequently in town at this time and there will be very few "Army" in Pattaya at all. The US Navy and Marines will be around, in small groups during and after Cobra Gold but you generally have to look for them to find them. They will be in a few of the ago-gos on Walking St and Pattayaland 2 in small groups. You might spot the small groups of healthy, clean-cut and well behaved young men. It's NOTHING like you would have seen back in the 60's and 70's.

The actual Cobra Gold exercises should be ending about today, the 13th. There will be some short passes and lots of "Cinderella passes" where the guys have to be back to Sattahip at midnight, so you generally don't see them out late. They are doing some disaster and rescue exercises up north this year near Chaing Mai as well, so I suspect there will be even less of a presence than normal.

The MP's and Shore Patrol will be out in force and you would really have to TRY HARD to ever have a problem with them. They have pretty strict orders and are subject to disciplinary action if there any incidents. People made far more "to-do" about Cobra Gold than it deserves. Drop a few hundred football hooligans in town and you would have exponetially more trouble.

Buy them a drink if you happen to run into a group.

Word is from friends in the military that the local commanders have reined in the level of debauchery that their soldiers can enjoy. Curfews and moral behavior will be more strictly enforced, so I'd expect the streets to be clear of all servicemen by 11pm or so, about the time that the action really picks up.

Be glad the Songkran Festival is over. Only in Pattaya does it go on and on for 8 days
US service people no problem, you wouldn't even know they are here.
Unfortunately you will always get the football hoolgan types in Pattaya and unfortunately Jomtein. These over weight bold shaven heads are seen in all the bars and public places usually loud agressive and shirtless.
Off course the Thais keep smiling but then again all good Thai people smile when they are happy, sad, mad or embarrassed.

Pattaya is one of the few places that a group can come in and still not be seen in farce. The curfew on the servicemen make it a little noticable early in the night, but all in all, they are non existant in a place as big as Pattaya.
