Bangla prostitution racket busted

A prostitution racket with links in Bangladesh operating in the
State has been busted by the Goa police.

The Crime Branch team laid a trap and arrested three women
who had forced a minor Bangladeshi girl, Mallika (real name
has been withheld) into prostitution in the State.


The women, who procured the sixteen-year-old Mallika from
Bangladesh, are believed to have been operating in the States
of Maharashtra and Gujarat, besides Goa.


The minor girl, Mallika, hailing from a poverty stricken family,
was approached by a 'sympathetic-looking' Bangladeshi
woman, who offered to take the girl to Mumbai with the promise
that the family would see a change in their fortunes.


Taking a circuitous route after crossing the international border,
they entered Mumbai where Mallika was lured into the world's
oldest profession.


Later, through another woman, Mallika found herself trapped
in the dirty trade in the city of Ahmedabad. From there, it was
back to Mumbai and then Goa.


While Mallika is believed to have been brought to Goa sometime
in mid-April, for a week, Mallika tried refusing to meet her clients
feigning illness. But, on April 23, police mention that Mallika was
coerced to go in a vehicle along with three individuals, taken to a
hotel where she was forced to consume liquor and have sexual
intercourse with one of the individuals.


The hotel's receptionist suspecting something hanky-panky
called the cops who rescued the girl and had her admitted in
the Apna Ghar Welfare Home.


At Apna Ghar, Mallika narrated her woeful tale of being bought
in from Bangladesh and being forced into the prostitution trade,
to the counsellor appointed by the government.


"A Crime Branch team led by SP V Borkar laid a trap and nabbed
the three women who had visited the State to secure Mallika's release
from the government institution. One of the arrested is a Bangladeshi
and the Bangladesh High Commission has been informed.


The three women, Rekha, Arti and Salma (alias Baby) have been
produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Panjim
and have been remanded to seven days police custody.


They will be interrogated by a team of lady police officers headed
by PI Sunita Sawant, who is investigating the case along with
PSI Maria D'Souza of the Women Police Station, Panjim.


We hope to nab more of such individuals who are involved in
this gang," DIG Mishra mentioned.


The case of the minor girl for the last few weeks was being
investigated by the Women and Child Department. Senior
officials had approached Bangladeshi Embassy and their
representative has visited Goa, sources added.
